Suffer the pain of discipline,

What is this powdery substance on my plants/ mulch

In the morning, I take a walk around my garden beds and notice on the mulch and on the stems of some plants two powdery substances. One is completely yellow and when touched all yellow Another is light colored the outside but like a dark powdery brown substance on the inside. The second one I find on my hostas and the first on various places on my black mulch. I am cluesless as to what it could be. Help!

It's mold/mildew. Your mulch is probably too thick or compacted. It's made worse by the humidity lately too, I'm sure. You could push the mulch away from the crowns of your plants for a few days, let them air out a bit. Fluff up the mulch, see if that helps. I read that you should put 3" of mulch down but I usually do less or I get mushrooms.

The yellow stuff... ugh. So gross, right? If you wait long enough, you'll see bright yellow mushroom looking things growing out of them. Chat Icon

If you remember a post you answered from weeks ago about my beach grass that was partially dead. It turns out it WAS getting too much moisture. The sprinkler head was literally spraying at the base of the grass AND bright yellow mushrooms were growing on the other half. My landscaper is going to replace it free of charge when he comes around to do some other work. Thank you again for all of yor advice!

Thank you! Chat Icon Trust me, I have left plenty of dead plants in my wake. I do learn from screwing up as much as I do from reading about things and trying them out. Chat Icon

I had a hunch Chat Icon I'm really glad your landscaper is working with you, because I know that those grasses are not cheap!

Another tip is to put out a tuna can anywhere you are questioning moisture. In general, if it fills up with water more than once or at most twice a week, it may be too much. If it doesn't fill up at all, it's too little.
