Who knows about sheets?

2 Questions:

1) There are so many different counts and types. I like soft and breathable. We all seem to run hot at night. What's the difference?

2) Also, I'm stuck between 2 duvet covers for my DS. He gets hot easy. I bought him a very light weight down comforter. Which one do you think is softer and lighter for a little boy. I want Navy.

This one is from PB and is organic (although I'm not sure what that means)

Re: Who knows about sheets?

The higher the thread count the better/softer the sheet.

A 200 thread count isn't great at all IMHO.

My fav sheets are 800 count or higher. Feels so awesome to sleep onChat Icon

Synthetic fabric, jersey knit and flannel will be hotter; while pima cotton, egyptian cotton, and silk will be cooler. A cotton blend can be ok but it depends upon what it is blended with.

I prefer cotton as it washes easily and is comfortable for us for all year use. As for thread count I prefer 400-800. A good pair of sheets for a queen size bed can run $75-100.

This set seems to have multiple good reviews: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=130425&RN=16&

This is actually not true

Thread count does not determine the softness.. the type of cotton does.

Re: Who knows about sheets?

Bicosi is correct. Just. because you have a high Tc does not mean the sheets will feel good. Think of it this way a lot of a bad thing will not make it better you will just have more of it

Cotton is the most common material used to make sheets, and is often the cheapest option. The most important factor when buying cotton sheets is thread count. These two words will determine whether your sheets feel like a gunny sack or a cloud. The lower the thread count is on your sheets, the scratchier they will be. The threads in lower thread count sheets are larger and more widely spaced. Thus, you feel the tiny bumps in the weaving and the largeness of the threads. The lowest thread count sheets are about 200. The higher the thread count goes however, the finer the threads and the softer the sheets. A decent set of sheets that won't set you back too much cost wise will have about a 400 thread count. I find these sheets perfectly soft, and they grow more comfortable with washing. Cotton sheets are my summer sheets because they breathe well and are light and cool.

Re: Who knows about sheets?

Numbers Are Meaningless: Well, sort of. Quality of cotton, not thread count, is key. According to Amanda Mettler, a textile buyer from Gracious Home, “long staple” cotton fibers like Egyptian cotton or U.S.-grown Pima cotton yield a smoother, softer end result. Make a 200 thread count your baseline. “Assuming the cotton is quality,” says Bed Bath & Beyond’s Sharon Silver, “I wouldn’t go much lower than that.” The higher end has no ceiling, even though, as Macy’s product manager Walter Bridgham notes, 1,000-thread-count sheets are so dense with yarn, they can start to feel “heavy, like a canvas.” Says designer Charlotte Moss, “I feel about thread count the way I feel about SPF. After a certain number, does it really matter? What you’re paying for at a Porthault, for example, isn’t just the high thread count—it’s the prestige and their beautiful, exclusive patterns, materials, and embroidery.” Quality control varies country to country. “I can guarantee a 200 thread count from Italy is better quality than a 1,000 thread count from Pakistan,” says Mettler.

Silky or Crisp: Sateen has a soft, cozy feel and attractive shine, so customers often perceive it as “more luxurious,” says Silver. At Sleep, a bedding boutique in Williamsburg, though, sateen doesn’t sell. Owner Hannah Curtin does better with percale weaves, which give a crisp, fresh feeling, “like when you’re getting into a cool bed in the summer.” If a sheet feels good to the touch but you’re unfamiliar with the label, Mettler recommends buying just pillowcases first to see how they come out after the first wash.

And to Make Them Last:Never dry-clean, says Lindsey Wieber, co-founder of the Laundress. And never, ever use bleach; OxiClean is a safer stain-fighter.
