Star spinoff-Veterens
Just FYI. If any of you are veterens you are able to get an additional tax break. I found that out when I went to file for star. There are certain stipulations but you never know! Doesn't hurt to ask.

Just so you know, to get a veterans discount you have to have served during ACTIVE war time or you don't qualify. SInce my husband served through peace time, we didn't qualify...

My Dh was in the national guard & ROTC all through college - it was during the Gulf War. I wonder if he would be considered a veteran.

My DH was in the Gulf War, Panama and Bosnia and I believe we get the additional discount - we'll see in January...

DH and I looked at a house several months ago owned by a Vietnam Veteran. he showed us his tax assessment and he was paying $3500 a year! I don't remember what the actual taxes were.

My dad served in Vietnam (although he was stationed in Germany) and they get a nice discount on their taxes.

Someone commented that the veteran had to have served during "war time". I asked my DH and an older friend of ours this weekend and they both thought it didn't sound right. My DH was in combat service, but the older man was not (he's 63) and he does get the veterans discount on his STAR.

Really??? I called the town when we first moved in and they gave me the number of the Veterans Administration in Hauppauge and that is what they told me. The vet had to have served at least one day during war time. It did not have to be in active combat, just enlisted while there is a war, could even be a conflict, ex Grenada, etc, and it couldn't be when they were in boot camp. I even called twice to make sure.
