Anyone hear of this ?
MY postman gave me something to sign today. It sounded pretty clear cut, he gave me a letter about it, so I signed.
Its a letter from an architect, they are supposedly adding an extension to a house down the block and any homes within 200 feet of it have to sign a variance to approve it...
My husb is annoyed that I signed so quick. I thought it was the right thing to do and not cause waves with neighbors.
Is there more to this than I realize, and I shoudnt have signed ?
The letter mentions descriptions of whats being done, seems like something about a retaining wall, reduces property at front of their house, reduce landscaped area, a whole paragraph with details... I figured its not affecting us anyway.
thoughts ?

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
I would have signed
I wouldn't want some neighbor not signing if I sent them some thing
I doubt it will affect your home

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
I got something in the mail once when my neighbor was adding an addition. I guess it varies from town to town?
It told us the basic idea of what was happening and if we wanted to go to the town meeting if we had more questions or concerns

I think that you did the right thing plus the house far enough from you that any changes they make outside the normal look of the rest of the homes will not intrude on your space in any way.

This happened to us twice, once in our 1st home, the 2nd in our current home. I signed, figuring if neighbors are renovating their home it can only add value to ours & the neighborhood

Great, thanks everyone. I knew my husband was over-reacting and exaggerating as usual.

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
I agree with everyone here. If it was next door to you, I could see going over it more. I have heard of it BTW. My neighbor was all annoyed that somehow he didnt receive a letter for some work on my block and he went on and on and on and on about it. Meanwhile it had zero impact on him IMO

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
The letter is just a notification of what they plan to do. There will be a hearing to determine if the variances will be granted so if your husband has issues with the expansion, he can voice them at the hearing.

Hi Anna!
I think this standard procedure when someone applies for a permit to do construction--its part of the town process.
Just unfortunately for them now the whole neighborhood knows about it

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
I never knew you had to sign for something like that! We received something in the mail last year about a neighbor who built a HUGE garage in his backyard without the proper permits and then I think applied for the permit after the fact In any case, I just remember reading that he was applying for the variance, not that we had to approve it or not. There was some info on going to the hearing if we wanted to object though.

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
We received a letter in the mail that a house diagnally behind us and 2 over was building a massive extension and if we had objections we needed to go to a meeting on a certain date. The externsion was BEAUTIFUL. Doesn't effect me at all. Only time I could see possibly objecting is if I was waterview and something would be blocking that but since I am not I am not worried about it.

Re: Anyone hear of this ?
Sounds like someone is trying to improve their home. I would never interfere with that.
Now, what can I sign to get the slobs next door to do something about their home???

He sounds like my DH I think you did the right thing. Unless it directly affects you, who cares.
