I think it depends... what kind of boat were they on when they had motion sickness?

Ships are so large these days, most of the time it doesnt even feel like you're moving. It's not like if you're on a fishing boat out of captree.

Yes my mother gets horrible motion sickness can't do any small boats. She has taken about 40-50 cruises and maybe only had 4-5 times total she has had any motion sickness (not 4-5 cruises - but 4-5 single incidents). She always carries motion sickness meds - never uses those patches. She watches the weather and if it is supposed to be rough she pops a dramamine - and is more careful what itineraries she chooses.

She does mostly European cruises and Caribbean and sometimes Bermuda.

She finds that when you leave out of NY or Florida she has more trouble than say out of San Juan where it is almost always calm.

You can definitely do it if you want to - you just need to be prepared. There are certain areas that are better to stay in (I don't have this issues although DH does) but we try to stay closest to middle of the ship as possible. You will find that the further front of the ship you are the rougher you will feel.

The large ships these days have good stablizers - so you only really feel any motion when it is really rough.

Agree with previous posters.

I find NY to Bermuda more rocky than a Caribbean cruise. Something about crossing over that jetstream is more difficult on me than the north/south of NY/MD/FL down to the caribbean.

I also take Bonine everyday, even if I dont think I will need it. The bonine doesnt make me drowsy (Dramamine does) so I take it just in case.

Re: Cruises - motion sickness?

Yes. My Dad has terrible motion sickness on regular boats (fishing, etc.).

He has enjoyed 4 cruises - Alaska, New England (out of NY), Bermuda and Caribbean.

My suggestion to you would be:

1. One that leaves from Florida
2. Do not go during the hurricane season
3. Go on one of the biggest ships there are
4. if you are not claustrophobic and don't need a window - get an inside room in the lowest part of the ship, as close to the middle as you can. if you need the window, get one in the middle of the ship, as low down.
5. Get one of those patches you put behind your ears
6. Try a 4 night one to see how it goes before you commit to a 7 night one.
