GHI-those that went from IUI to IVF
I just got off the phone w/the Dr office & I was asking the receptionist about GHI Ins. I know they require 12 IUI's before IVF. I thought b2b counted as 2 but she said it doesnt. I have had 6 iuis and will be taking a break. I dont think I can do another 6 to match the 12 they require. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I spoke to someone from GHI when I was worried about this and they said that if your dr writes a letter/email/calls persistently explaining that IUI will NOT work for you.. they can waive this.

I meant to tell you this as I just found out they count it as a "cycle" not per IUI which really stinks. Further, at the suggestion on my Dr. he said we could 1 of 2 things; 1) write a letter to GHI explaining that IUI treatment is not the path you should be on and try to get IVF coverage (he has had it approved for GHI patients in the past) and 2) do 6 more cycles, unmedicated, unmonitored and use OPK and when you get a surge then just come in the next morning for an IUI...the later is the path we go on. Good luck!

I really cannot emotionally do another 6 cycles. Does anyone know how long it takes for GHI to approve IVF after Dr write a letter?

I had 4 and had had enough. My doctor made a few calls and it took one month for the rejection to be turned around.
Good Luck!

YUP, they can waive it but first your dr has to show why IVF is the best choice for you now.
shouldnt take too long after they receive all the requested information. Just keep up with it, the more active you and your dr is with it the faster you will get responses

Re: GHI-those that went from IUI to IVF
thanks ladies! unfortunately we have to wait until Oct to switch to GHI. I was hoping we would switch & start IVF right away but now it sounds like we have to go back & forth with the ins co for a while before approval. UGHHHHHHHHH

Dr.B thought we had a pretty good case ... turned out we did and I was approved. It took about a week, I think.

Re: GHI-those that went from IUI to IVF
Not sure about your diagnosis - but we were unexplained. Husband had good counts and I made a nice amount of eggs. According to GHI, there was no reason and although we did 2 rounds of IUI, both doctors I saw for IVf said there was no way GHI would change their mind. After many hours of going back and forth, we paid out of pocket for 2 fresh cycles. The stress it was causing, in addition to the general stress of infertility was too much for me. Although we spent lots of $$$, I am so happy we decided to go ahead with IVF and not waste our time on IUI's. I hope you have a better experience with GHI. As someone previously mentioned, they suck with covering meds as well - whether IUI or IVF. Good LUCK!!!!

Re: GHI-those that went from IUI to IVF
Maybe a diagnosis of endo will help support IVF. We had no diagnosis - which was really hard for me emotionally - and to top it off made it even harder for insurance to see that we were infertile! Good Luck!!!

Yes...I think a diagnosis of endo along with having done 6 IUI's already will greatly help you get approved. I did 2 IUI's and then they approved IVF after rejecting my request after the 1st IUI. They said..do one more IUI and if it does not work...they would approve IVF...and they did. Because of my age..6 was the requirement but that was waived to two. So..you may not get exactly what you want the first time you ask, but they may lower the requirements. GL!!

stage III & IV endo is one of the requirements if you want to waive doing the 12 IUIs! also if the endo blocked any of your tubes is also a reason they will accept to waive ...good luck

My tubes are not blocked & I have mild endo but I know that the endo is causing me not to get preg b/c we are healthy otherwise. Now I have to worry whether or not the damn ins co is going to give me a hard time. I have enough crap to be stressed about! I just want to be pregnant!!
