Progesterone Question

I'm curious about something and I'm wondering if anyone here would know the answer.

I took an hpt on day 29 of my cycle and got a bfp so I went for a beta/progesterone blood draw the next day (I am pretty certain I was 15dpo) and the beta was 259 and the progesterone was 54.1

My question is about the progesterone. I previously had a miscarriage and I had all types of tests run but they never found a reason why I miscarried the pregnancy. My mid luteal progesterone was monitored for a few cycles to see if that could have been the issue but it was always fine, hovering around 20 at 7dpo every cycle I was tested.

This cycle I did not have mid luteal progesterone run (since it didn't seem to be the problem) so I have no idea what my progesterone would have been at 7dpo but if it is normally 20 could it rise up to 54 that quickly? More than double in a week?

I'm asking because I googled my beta and progesterone (I know I shouldn't have but after having a loss I'm trying not to lose it) and it seemed like my numbers were kind of high? My doctor said both numbers were great for 4 weeks but we need to make sure the beta doubles. I go back for beta again tomorrow and I'm praying it's ok.

I know I should be relaxing and not worrying/thinking about this stuff but I can't seem to keep my mind still. This is totally different than last time because I know the harsh reality of what can happen.

Thanks Chat Icon

Re: Progesterone Question

Hmmm I have a question. What/if any medications were you taking this time? I had a MC last year and my progesterone was really low when I miscarried. I had been spotting brown for a while.

This time (I am now over 9 weeks) My beta was at 13dpo was 156 and my progesterone was over 90. I was so confused on why the progesterone was so high. I was on progesterone supps but I heard that doesn't make your number higher. My DR explained to me that when you take meds ( I took femara, folisitim, dex, prog) that your progesterone tends to be even higher then normal. I know girls who have a progesterone of 20 and others who are over 100. The progesterone number also fluctuates each beta.

As long as your beta is doubling then you are in great shape. Your numbers sound perfect for 16dpo!

Re: Progesterone Question

No medication at all.

After I had my blood drawn yesterdy I started using progesterone supps "just in case" it came back low but they called with the result today and said the progesterone was outstanding and that I didn't need the medication and to stop using it. I only used it for a day but only started it after I had the blood drawn so I was medication free at the time.

I was hoping for 20 maybe close to 30, I wasn't expecting to hear 54. I figured it would be just slightly higher or the same as it usually was around 7dpo because I thought it rose slowly?

I guess it doesn't really matter as long as it's not low. I rather it be high! I just hope I get a good beta increase, I won't know until Monday.

Congratulations to you, happy and healthy!!

Re: Progesterone Question

it is a great prog number, you have nothing to worry about . if anything, it indicates a healthy pregnancy. i also had prog in that range in the beginning and dr said it was perfect.

was your cycle medicated?

No, no medication. Well, if you count mucinex than yes! LMAO! But no fertility meds.

This is our second pregnancy. I miscarried the first one and when the genetic testing came back normal they ran the miscarriage panel on me anyway to see if there was another cause. I was grateful that they ran it after only one loss. Everything came back normal.

I'm just worried because I don't know what went wrong the first time around so I'm paranoid. Chat Icon

Re: Progesterone Question

usually such high prog is common for medicated cycles ( injectables especially), but for you, it just means that your ovaries were really cooked and ready... great sign.

i also had 1 mc before and of course you can not know the reason, even though i am 15w prego now, i am still super paranoid, b/c of prior experience.

try to relax and congrats!Chat Icon

your progesterone number seems fine, i wouldnt worry about it. and yes it can jump from 20 to 54 rather quickly with a medicated cycle BFP.

sounds like you are in good shape! congrats! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks girls. Even though it sounded like good news I'm afraid to get excited. I'm trying not to stress and remain calm but that is easier said than done. The numbers were just a little higher than I expected. And I thought I was worried the first time around Chat Icon
