spinoff to occupation thread: lawyer moms...

I am a corporate attorney at a large firm in the city (where I live as well). Currently on the fence as to whether I should even bother coming back part time after maternity leave since there really is no such thing as part time in biglaw world (only part salary haha). What are your plans?

i work at a mid-sized long island firm which is conveniently (or sometimes not so conveniently) 5 miles from my house. i will be coming back F/T. I generally work 9-7 but hopefully they'll be a little more understanding if I have to head home a little earlier on days that my DH works. I'd love to work P/T but we can't afford it.

I'm not a lawyer but I work on a Bank trading floor on wall street. My hours are 7.30am to about 5/5.30....10 hour work days are the standard here.

After my leave, I intend to change my hours to 7am to 4.30...I may even push for 4pm. I will do my best to ensure I have quality time with my baby. Luckily DH doesn't have to be in the office until 9am and has a 15 minute commute. We will have our nanny start at 8am to ensure DH has a bit of time to himself to get ready.

I can't see myself working part time, there really is no such thing. Good luck to us all! I think we can make it work.

I am coming back part time for 2 months. Then I go back to full time. I work in a mid-size firm.

Just out of curiosity...what do you all get for maternity leave?

I'll be going back full time after maternity leave. Now I work like 9:30 to about 7 but I plan on working more like 9 to 5. My office is pretty flexible like that though...they are the type that has the mentality that they don't really care what you are doing so long as your billing is where it needs to be.
In this aspect, I am very lucky. Maternity leave...not so much.

I work for a smaller firm so we don't qualify for FMLA. They haven't spoken to me directly yet as I have been out on bedrest (although I was 25 weeks when that happened and they didn't say anything up until that point). They spoke to my other co-worker last week and said they changed the maternity policy. She was told she has to use all her vacation time and then whatever she chooses to stay out thereafter is unpaid. So if I take 6 weeks, 3 will be upaid. Such B.S. I earned vacation time. If that's what they are really going to do, I'm going to return the favor and do the bare minimum. They will not get a single extra hour out of me. Both my co-worker and I have exceeded the billing requirement by 200-400 hours every year and they are going to screw us out of 6 weeks of pay? Really? I'm livid.

8w paid, add'l 4w can use sick/vacation days (if you have them) or unpaid, or combo. It should work out well for me bc my mat. leave will roll over into next year, so i will def. have enough vacation days to not have to go unpaid.

Great question.. I wish I knew the answer!

Right now I work at a smallish litigation firm in the city./live on the island so my hours are generally 9-6 but I leave the house a little after 8 and get home a little before 7 with the commute.

After the baby, I would love to work 4 days a week, but Im not suire that is an option. Otherwise I am going to try to either start later or leave earlier, by an hour, for child care purposes, and my own sanity. I dont think work would mind, or that I would even need to specifically tell them, they are pretty flexible like that-- I think.

I wish I could work 2-3 days a week only-but cant afford to do that, and Im not sure my firm would be willing to do that. Im also not a fan of working from home.

My job is completely in flux now anyway as its in the middle of a more than likely buy out (my firm is being bought out) so everthing can change, including whether I will have a job come decembe rwhen Im due!

As far as I kjnow (I havent told work yet and they dont have an official policy) I dont get any paid leave, since I fall over 2011 and 2012 with maternity leave, I'll use 2 weeks vacation in 2011 and 2 in 2012 and likely take the remaining 8 weeks as unpaid.. blows! Maybe they'll throw me a bone with 1-2 weeks of maternity leave paid- but i doubt it.

When do you girls plan on starting your leave? I was thinking somewhere between 36 and 38 weeks but starting to think maybe I will stay closer to 38+

we get paid leave under FMLA from the time the OB tells us to stop working until 6 weeks post-partum, then mat leave kiicks in (which is 8 weeks for my firm), then we can all of our vacation (which is 6 weeks) and can get up to 6 additional months unpaid. so anywhere from 14-20 weeks paid depending on your choice.

Am a solo practitioner on LI and also have a P/T job as a prosecutor in traffic court. No paid maternity leave but am lucky that my jobs afford me the flexibility to spend lots of time with my kids. As far as my own practice I can start it up and shut it down when I need. For the most part I can get my cases resolved before the baby comes and then not take any new ones til I want.

I though maternity leave under FMLA was unpaid? Unless the company wants to be nice enough to pay you, but its not required to be paid under FMLA, only required that they hold your job?

This is ideal. You are so lucky to be able to do that. I wish I had the cajones and the financing to be able to do that. Good for you!
