Perineum Massage
Did anyone actually do this? I've been reading about it in my books and on my weekly email updates from baby sites, but I'm having a hard time deciding if it's really necessary. I'm not really a conservative or bashful person but something about massaging my perineum or even having DH do it is rather unsettling. At the same time, I'm worried that I could be doing something to help prevent tearing.

Re: Perineum Massage
I read about this as well. I can't see it doing anything bad so I say go for it, it could only benefit us by helping not tear. Just make it fun andcombine it into some foreplay

Re: Perineum Massage
I'm sure every person is different... but I did it every single day in the shower with a little vasiline for the entire last 4-6 weeks of my pregnancy and it didn't prevent anything. I even had the nurse and my OB massaging/stretching me during delivery and I still needed to be cut AND had two nasty 2nd degree tears upwards (in a V shape).
I suppose it could've been worse. A friend of mine tore all the way up to her urethra and had to go home with a catheter for 10 days.
My DD does have an incredibly large head, though, compared to the rest of her. As soon as the doctor cut me, she popped right out.

Make it fun....there is nothing modest about birth so this will help you get those boundaries down.
Maybe integrate it into foreplay. Do you practice squatting- using yoga blocks? That is another good way to stretch the tissues in the area.

Re: Perineum Massage
my friend has had three kids and used a midwife that did perineum massage during delivery. she never tore once and her babies were all 8lb+. im not sure how effective it is before delivery - but during delivery if done right it could be helpful. good luck!

Re: Perineum Massage
I did for the last few weeks... DS was a little under 9 lbs, and had some small tears. Figure the massaging can't hurt!

Re: Perineum Massage
Dropping in from parenting . . . My nurse did it without my even asking while I was pushing (for over 4 hours! ) and it did NOTHING. I still had an awful 3rd degree tear BUT my OB wound up using a vacuum to get DD out, which I'm sure has a lot to do with it. If anything, it can't hurt!
