I am so upset re: christening...

So money is pretty tight right now and it looks like we might not be having a christening party for Andrew like I wantedChat Icon Chat Icon

I know it shouldn't be about the party but I always pictured all of our family together and having it at a hall, etc. Looks like we will have just our siblings and parents, grandparents out to dinner.

I never realized how expensive it would be. Especially because we would have 130 people.

I just wanted to vent. I am a little disappointedChat Icon

awww Chat Icon Chat Icon I am sorry it is not faling into place the way you hoped it would. we are having a similiar problem - it is so expensive!! we are going to push back the christening for a bit so that hopefully it is possible in a few mths. is this an aoption for you? or, what about cutting the guest list a little?

Re: I am so upset re: christening...

Dont be sad-

We did a BIG party for Ryans christening... and when I look back- while everything was great- I wish I had done something smaller...

He was so little- and slept the entire party- had no clue where we were- NOBODY danced to the DJ- there was so much family there- even ones we dont talk too...

And now I feel like I gotta do bigger and better for his b-day- esp. since he will be able to enjoy it...

Have your closet family members and maybe real close friends and have a nice relaxing dinner

This is what we did for Gianna's christening cause we want to have a BIG party for her 1st birthday, when she is actually up and around to enjoy it.

Yes, don't be sad. Money is tight for us too. I probably won't be having a party for that same reason.

Re: I am so upset re: christening...

We are having a baby dedication and we are having a luncheon at the church (they have a nice finished basement that is great!) for the same reason. Just close family and close friends about 45 people. I don't mind that, because what matters most to me is that I am able to be home P/T with my DD. If that means we cut back on a HUGE party, that is what it means.

IMHO, the most important thing is the sacrament, not the party. It will be WAY more intimate with just close family there. You won't have to go through the headache of planning a whole BIG party that your DS won't really remember anyway. I am sorry it did not work out the way you thought it would but, if you reframe it in your mind, it might be better than you thought.

All of that said, here are a few alternative ideas:

What about having a BBQ at your home after the Christening? or
a pot luck at the house where everyone can bring a covered dish? or
have the Christening now and the party in a few months?

Just trying to think outside the box. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I am so upset re: christening...

what about looking into a hall like a knights of columus or a fire house if you know somone who is local volunteer and then making or having family and friends make the food it would be alot cheaper that way. just an idea, this is what we are doing.

Re: I am so upset re: christening...

We're doing a small family-only gathering at our house after the Christening. No aunts, uncles, cousins or friends, we just did our immediate family (parents, brothers and sisters and their kids). Even with just that, we have big family's and will have about 25-30 people. I am cooking for it all and the only thing we are ordering is the cake. I wanted to have it at a restaurant, but that becomes big bucks and we are trying to save and cut back, so this is it.

I'm sorry AllisonChat Icon I know its disappointing, but we are already planning on something small for just immediate family (grandparents, godparents, siblings and maybe our best friends) since money is going to be tight.

As others have mentioned you, DH and Andrew may enjoy having a bigger 1st birthday party if you have more money by then.

I completely agree! We ended up having to go smaller than we originally wanted and we still had a great time! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I am so upset re: christening...

We waited until Emily was 9 months old do Baptise her because we were holding out to have the money for a party -- but for us that money never came -- so we ended up just doing a BBQ with immediate family in my FIL's back yard afterwards. It was about 20 people, cost us about $450 for all the food/drinks and was VERY nice...

I wish I could have invited relatives but it would have been over 100 people.

Re: I am so upset re: christening...

Don't be upset. Save now for his first birthday. He will enjoy it more. We are having a very small party, just relatives, not even one friend. I've been to Christenings where there was a cocktail hour, dj, venetian hour, etc. and it's really not necessary b/c the baby has no clue what's going on. A nice bbq sounds like a good idea or going out to eat for a late lunch would be ideal. Whatever you do, enjoy the day and don't focus on what you would have liked to do.
