I don't think anyone is sure what you're really asking...lol...

The taxes are what they are, and only you can decide what your family can afford. The commute from NHP into the city isn't too bad at all--probably less than 45 mins.

your best option is the LIRR. I think it is about 35 minutes direct from the NHP station to PENN station in NYC.
Hope this helps

Re: New Hyde Park people....

i don't live IN new hyde park but i do commute from that station from time to time and it's really quick into manhattan or atlantic ave. - just over 30 minutes. a lot of the trains during rush hour only stop at Jamaica after NHP.

Re: New Hyde Park people....

We were considering NHP (in either Great Neck or Herricks SD), but decided to buy in Queens(Forest Hills), mainly because moving to NHP would have forced us to get a nanny, and staying close to my parents meant free child care.

We researched the commute and thought it was fairly decent. Also, I don't know your income, but realize that although you'll pay more in property tax than in Queens, you will not be paying NYC income tax. That was a huge plus on the "move to NHP" column for us, but in the end we knew childcare would be very expensive as well. Talk to your accountant.

i know what you mean by free child care, thats what we have now...but NHP is near to Queens, at least the part we are looking at...Forest Hills is $ isnt it? I live in Bayside now, and these houses here are insane for me! Chat Icon

no, you would only pay state taxes if you lived in LI. It's where you live, not work. Also, the difference between higher LI taxes & paying city taxes was not equivalent in my case at all as I dug into this as well. I would not come out even, I guess I could say. LI taxes were more $ than what I would be saving in city taxes if I moved from queens.

I grew up in NHP and my parents still live there. Whats NYP? Are you talking about Lakeville Estates? The area that goes to Great Neck, or the other side of Hillside which goes to NHP Memorial?

You have 2 options besides driving of course.. LIRR which is a 5 minute drive from anywhere in NHP or bus thats on Hillside that takes you down to Jamaica to the subway. My mom did that for years, and loved it..

I think this depends on your profession... If you work for the city and live on LI you pay the city taxes. Otherwise no, you just pay state taxes.
