calling all bakers...

I have been trying to figure out what recipe to use for cutout cookies that I can cover with fondant. I want to use the same cutout used to cut the cookie, to cut the fondant. I was told that certain recipes would make cookies that expand, which would leave you with a little border around the fondant when you apply it. I have tried twice now with a sugar cookie recipe and a "cut out" cookie recipe and both times it doesn't work, the cookie doesn't expand... it actually gets slightly smaller leaving the fondant falling over the edge. Please help, is there a way to make this happen or do I just need to cut the fondant with the cookie cutter and then trim it smaller? I was thinking maybe shortbread? TIA for the help!

Re: calling all bakers...

Honestly, I'd just use royal icing. Is there any particular reason you want to use fondant?

ETA: And I actually find that my cookies expand. Chat Icon That's why you kinda have to space them out a lot on the cookie sheet.

Re: calling all bakers...

Any recipe that calls for baking soda, baking powder will expand the cookie

I like the look of fondant and being able to roll a pattern on it. I guess I'll have to keep trying. I also think the butter cookie that a pp said might be worth a shot.

I always find my fondant shrinks after I cut it. What fondant recipe do you use?

Re: calling all bakers...

I always use a shortbread cookie recipe because they spread very little, and I find that the fondant fits them perfectly. But, if the fondant is ever too big, you can gently mold it so it fits the shape perfectly.
I love the look of a fondant decorated cookie!Chat Icon

Re: calling all bakers...

a simple shortbread cookie recipe will not expand and stay the same shape/size of the cutter you use.
