A/C company tried to scam me...should I put a stop payment on the check?

The blow motor went on our AC unit upstairs. We had a electrician friend come over originally who told us this was the problem and exactly what part we needed. I contacted a AC company at the rec of family. They came over and told me that being our unit is 10 years old there may be no way to get the part, etc. They would contact York the manufacturer or try to find a comparable part. The service fee was $150.

Today they call me and tell me they don't make the part and there is no compatible part. I need a whole new unit for $4500. I called my dad who told me this was BS and to call YOrk directly. I just got off the phone with York, the manufacturer, and they told me not only did the guy give me the wrong model # and serial # that they absolutely still have the part we need available.

I am furious. I spent $150 for a service call where they gave me bogus info and tried to sell me a new unit. I want to put a stop payment on the check I wrote them because I hate scammers and liars.

What, if anything can I/should I do?

I would call and speak with a manager there. Explain the situation and ask for your money back. Let them know that you will not be using their business anymore, and you will never recommend them to anyone you know. And if they don't give you the money back, let them know they can read all about their company on BBB Chat Icon

That's ridiculous!

Contact Consumer affairs. They are the ones who will make a mark on their record. If they are listed with the BBB they pay for that service. It doesn't have the same impact.

Also, call them and explain it to them. I would tell them that these unscrupulous practices will put them out of business. Mistakes happen but forunately you were saavy enough to catch it. What about others who take the repair person's word for it?

I would follow up with a certified letter and cc consumer affairs and the bbb.
