Is 39 too old? Need your advice!

Hi Everyone,

I am sort of new, joined back in April (I used to live up north, but now a FL girl), LOVE YOU GUYS! so hope you don't mind giving me some advice! but here is my story....

I am 39 (40 in Jan), I have an 11 year old son that I gave birth to through ZIFT. My husband had a vasectomy and reversal that did not work (before we were married). I have always wanted another child, finally convinced husband to try again. We just went through IVF and got the BFN. I was able to get two eggs that fertilized. Just met with doctor today. He says that we should get a donor egg if we really want to get pregnant. What are your thoughts on this? We are totally out of pocket, no insurance, so I really want to weigh my options. My husband wants only to use my eggs, but are they really too old? ....Anyone in a similar position?

Smiles,

Debbie

I am 38 and just got pregnant for the 1st time on my 3rd IVF (frozen) there is a history of early menopause in my family my mum was 36 my grandma was 38 and i was having 21 day cycles which concerned my RE so we were aggresive with my treatment. I did produce lots of eggs each cycle but we had to go through 15 to get a BFP. I wish you luck and don't worry about age it can happen. I would have him give you more information on the egg quality. Will he consider doing more cycles with you with your own eggs?

No experience but IMO 39 is NOT too old at all.

I have cousins that got pregnant in their 40s naturally no problems and there are quite a few Moms on here that used IVF/IUI to get pregnant around your age and older than you so I wouldn't automatically go to DE. Of course it all depends on your eggs, but I'm 43 and having my first (after 5 IVFs). I have diminished ovarian reserve and was a poor responder but it is possible. Talk to your Dr. about perhaps changing your protocol.

It's not too old but be realistic. At 39 your chances statistically are not great. possibly a 20% chance.

You really have to consider that donor egg is at about 60-70% depending on the clinic.

So while I think there's a chance, you really need to know what your realistic chances are.

Good luck.

Your chances with donor egg is much, much higher than that with your own eggs.
Being that you are self pay you should weigh your options. You may need to go through numerous fresh ivf cycles and even then, may not even get a baby.

Donor egg is VERY expensive, and even then, you may not end up with a baby. But the statistics are very high.

I think using donor eggs is a great option (for anybody). But its a serious step and u and dh should talk about all of the things that come with using a donor. Will both of u see this as ur child? Will u tell the child? Will u tell others? What is important in choosing a donor?

Re: Is 39 too old? Need your advice!

You are NOT to old!!!!! I did my first IVF cycle at age 40 due to unexplained IF..... The Dr gave me a 25% chance that it would work and I get pregnant. Well..... they got 24 eggs out of me and 13 fetilzed. I had 4 put back and ended up with my triplets who will be 2 in July. So I say you are definelty not to old......If your Dr feels your eggs arent going to work out then I would go for donor egg. A friend of my SIL just went thru her 6th IVF cycle this time she used donor eggs and is 6 weeks pregnant with twins.

I wish you all the best!!!!!
