Re: Another homeowner poll

we havent bought yet, but i have my excel spreadsheet (what would I do without excel??) and after all our bills, and 401k savings, we will have $500 left (and on my sheet I round up to build in some emergency $$).

to me thats not alot to save each month, to others it might be.

I am with you on that. IMO, $500 a month to save is not a lot. because we rent, we're able to save my salary.

hmm, maybe we should just keep renting Chat Icon

Re: Another homeowner poll

i get bonuses every 6 months - so i usually put those right into savings.

i also get 10% of my salary put into 401k with a 10% company match program

yea, right now I save a whole paycheck + some. Its nice living at home!

but we will only consider a fixed rate mortgage, and he gets a raise in september, and IM due in march, so we would be able to increase it if we bought a house before. and thats for the highest mortgage amount we feel comfortable with.

Re: Another homeowner poll

We based all our finances for the house on just DH's salary so we are able to continue putting my paycheck's directly into our savings...plus some of DH's (however not as much as before). Any bonuses also go directly to savings...

Re: Another homeowner poll

We bought our house about 3 months before we got married so all of our big down payments were already taken care of.

When we got married we took a chunk of money and put it towards the house (we built an apartment in the basement, landscaping, granite, etc) and then we took a nice amount and locked it up so that we can't even touch it.

Basically the same thing. We've been lucky too that since we've been in the house (almost a year) we've been able to pay down a huge amount of the mortgage too with the sale of DH's condo.

Re: Another homeowner poll

We were saving quite a bit after about a year in the house. Then we bought another property. Now it's a struggle to save anything but now we are doing a forced savings plan through our brokerage account. We're going to "try" to put $1000 away each month. Keep your fingers crossed.

It's part of our long term savings and retirement plan. We are striving for having a certain amount liquid when we retire so we don't depend on SS.

Re: Another homeowner poll

I feel like I am poor!! I was happy when I was able to save $100/month! We also have 2 kids in day & after care that takes a chunk of our money per week.

Re: Another homeowner poll

The first year was rough only b/c we didn't know how to budget properly.

But now we are able to save a good amount. We treat our savings account as a bill and we pay our savings account every 2 weeks. HTH.
