maternity pay

I know this subject has been "beaten to death" but I just sat down and calculated how much time I will have for maternity leave and it only covers 1 1/2 months for the rest of the time I will be on leave with out pay. It is depressing me the thought that i won't be able to financially contribute to the household.

Re: maternity pay

Same situation here and the next 5 months when they're in day care FT my ENTIRE salary will be going to it - so no pay for me for about 6 1/2 months...but we need my insurance so back to work I go. Chat Icon

Re: maternity pay

Chat Icon I know. While my boss is great and said I can have off for as long as I want to, I know it is unpaid. So I am taking 8 weeks, which I will be able to use the first two weeks with my vacation, the other 6 weeks nada. Chat Icon

I don't get anything from my job, other than vacation/personal days that I save up, Chat Icon
I'll collect short term disability (5 - 8 weeks depending) which is only $170 a week (which I might add was the same amount my Mother collected from short term disability when she had my younger brother 23 years ago), so as of right now, I will only be taking 6 weeks off and then back to work.

I hope I am interpreting my benefits correctly...it says for short term disability I get paid 100% of my salary for the first 3 weeks and then for weeks 4-12 I get 80% of my salary...

I assume maternity leave qualifies as short term disability.....once I break the news to them, I will have to find out for sure. I am hoping that way I read it is correct. How did you calculate $170 (is that a fixed amount or a percentage of your salary?

I reread my benefits and this is what it says, I was correct in the way I interpreted it...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Unexpected illness or injury can happen at any time. When such an event occurs, disability benefits provide financial security for individuals until they are able to return to work.

The goals of the TIAA Disability Program are:

• To provide income during periods when an employee is unable to work due to illness or injury, and
• To facilitate an employee's return to health, and ultimately to work, whenever possible.

Short-Term Disability

Eligibility

All full-time and part-time salaried and hourly employees are eligible for Short Term Disability insurance coverage on the date of hire. TIAA pays the full cost of Short Term Disability insurance coverage for eligible employees.

Definition of Disability

Under the Short Term Disability Plan, an employee will be considered disabled if, as a result of physical disease, injury, pregnancy or mental disorder, the employee:

• Is unable to perform his/her own occupation on a reasonably continuous basis, and consequently
• Suffers a loss of at least 20% of their earnings.

Income Benefit Provisions

Short Term Disability Benefits begin on the 8th consecutive calendar day of illness or injury. The maximum benefit is 26 weeks. The Plan pays benefits based on the following schedule, regardless of the employee's length of service:
• Weeks 1 through 3: 100% of base salary
• Weeks 4 through 13: 80% of base salary
• Weeks 14 through 26: 70% of base salary

The $170 is a fixed amount. That is what I got when I had my daughter, a year and a half ago. That was through the state though, my job doesn't offer anything. It looks like your job has additional Short Term Disability Benefits.

Thanks for the offer - Chat Icon When I had Isabella we put money on the side (put less down on the house when we bought it), I knew with this baby that wasn't going to be the case though!
