Very new here, Question about Vasectomy & IVF?

Hi Ladies,

I am very, very new here - this is my first time posting on this board. First - Good Luck to all of you who are trying to conceive. I've been browsing and my heart truly goes out to all of you. Many Blessings. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Does anyone know anything about sperm retrieval and IVF? DH has a vasectomy which was performed back in '97 (I believe). Reversal is not an option. Has anyone been down this road? I don't know anything about this at all, I literally feel stupid even posting but i'm hoping you all are understanding and can maybe lead me down the right path.

DH and I had agreed to start trying this Spring but i'm nervous and pushed it off AGAIN! I think I just need to take that leap and do it so any help/advice/recommendations will be so greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Chat Icon

I believe that there are procedures where they will extract the sperm directly from the testicles. I know I have read on here that some couples have had to have this procedure done and it worked out fine. If you see an RE and explain the situation, I think they will automatically recommend IVF with ICSI.

Good luck and I hope everything works out.

don't feel stupid about posting here Chat Icon you have a very ligitimate concern!

You DH can either consider a reversal, which I believe the rates of success are pretty good for this procedure. Or you can go straight to a Reproductive Endocrologist to discuss IVF. They would stimulate you to produce multiple eggs, extract them, extract his sperm directly through a special procedure and then put your sperm and eggs together to fertilize. They may take one step further to inject the sperm into the egg to help with the fertilization process. Once your eggs fertilize, they transfer back an egg to your uterus and hopefully it implants. You can then freeze the remainging eggs that fertilized if you need/want to try again in the future.

Would your DH feel comfortable meeting with the urologist first? He could go over all of the options with both of you.

My friends husband had a reversal, it did not work and then did IVF through direct removal. She had twin girls!

No question is stupid or too private for this board. All we do all day is talk about penis' and vaginas and the gooey stuff that happens to come out of each Chat Icon

I believe the stats for reversal are better than TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction). But I do know of people who had succes with both ! Talking to a RE is your first step!

Best of Luck to you and your DH!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

TTC is scary! I put it off as long as I could (33) and then my feelings changed. I was STILL scared, but i was even more scared to never be a mommy! You are not alone in ANYTHING you are feeling!Chat Icon

Thank you all for your responses ! Especially, this one above. :) It's a hard topic to start discussing but I'm so appreciate of all these positive responses. I, too, am 33 and starting to get nervous.

Any recommendations on great doctors? DH doesn't want a reversal. I already have 2 amazing stepchildren and DH didn't plan to have any more. For our sake, he's willing to give it a go but would prefer not to have the reversal. I'm nervous after so many years that it wouldn't work anyway and that we'd have to do the IVF after all so maybe it's for the best.

Does anyone know of any great doctors?

Thank you all SO much again Chat Icon

I know the whole process is very overwhelming, and it's great you're getting started and looking for information. My husband has no vas deferens and it is treated the same as if he had a vasectomy. If he does not want to have the reversal, you will have to do IVF and he will most likely have a sperm aspiration (TESA). My husband has had the procedure 3 times. We have been through IVF 3 times and they prefer a fresh sample each time. A urologist can perform this. Some insurance companies will cover this, but they may not if it is because of a vasectomy. I believe our policy specifically mentions this. The out of pocket cost would be about $750 and $1000 depending on the urologist. We saw two different drs. and that was the range. It's a very quick and fairly simple procedure. It only takes about ten minutes and he'll be fine that day. He might be a bit sore for a couple of days, but totally fine.
