I love it!!!

So...we went to IKEA last night! (got the babysitter to stay later so we could go Chat Icon ). I fell in love with a kitchen and we made a plan but DH balked when he found out he had to put everything together.

So, let me ask you....where do you and your husband find the time to do this??? How long did it take you? Did you have a lot of help? I know you both work, as do we and you have young kids, as do we. We so want to do this but I just don't know if we have the time. Chat Icon

We are adrenaline junkies. On our first few houses, we would work on it at night, after Alex went to sleep. Now, with two kids, it's a little more challenging. So, I'm basically the SAHM, while DH works on the house. He stays there until 9/10pm every night working while I take care of the kids, and he goes there early in the morning too, and stays there all weekend.

He can't possibly renovate an entire house all by himself so he did hire a helper - a 65 year old, hippie, vegan furniture-maker named Roland. While DH is at work, Roland stays at the house doing work, and then DH meets up with him at the end of the day.

It IS a lot of work and a lot of time, but, to completely renovate a house, stripping every room down to the studs, and rebuilding, the total cost is going to be about $70k, so Dh's involvement is saving us thousands of dollars. It's a hard few months, but in the long run, it's worth it, and I just keep reminding myself it's only temporary.

For the kitchen itself, it usually takes us between 1-2 weeks to install the kitchen. With our current kitchen, we would put Alex to sleep at 7pm, and we would work on it until about 11pm. I would build the cabinets and DH would install them. He installed the countertops himself, and then we tiled the floor and backsplash together.
