"safe" cold medicines?

i'm really suffering here... so i emailed my doctor and asked what i can take to feel better. he said tylenol cold and sinus, mucinex-d, and sudafed, as needed.
yes i KNOW my dr said these are ok but i'm still having trouble actually believing it's ok, i guess because it's been so ingrained in my head from... people?... that you can't take cold medicine.

anyone else told that these things are ok? anyone take them and live to tell?

thanks Chat Icon

Re: "safe" cold medicines?

i had a bad cold/sinus issue while pg the 1st time and took sudafed bc my OB assured me it was perfectly safe. The pharmacist said, "NO WAY!", but after checking with my OB again, I took it.

Wellllll, I was up all night with heart palpitations. I was thisclose to going to the ER, that's how lousy it made me feel.

I'm not trying to scare you, just sharing my experience. I'd try the tylenol first. Chat Icon

Feel better!

no, i don't have a humidifier, and the pharmacist told me not to get the saline spray until i got the "ok" from my doctor - I didn't hear back from him til this morning. i'm hoping there's a pharmacy open somewhere!

Check CVS' website. They are the one pharmacy that is usually open on holidays. Feel better.

Re: "safe" cold medicines?

I took sudafed a few times early on - 1st and 2nd tri.

Worked for me and all was fine. No problems at all.

And I'm 30 weeks today.

Re: "safe" cold medicines?

I am not PG...but I always have a VERY bad reaction to Sudafed. It makes me feel like my whole body is racing.

I'm SURE that this is a common reaction to med's and has NOTHING to do with it being safe for PG.

Just my .02.

Re: "safe" cold medicines?

Robitussin (the regular one) is on my safe list.

I'm pretty sure you won't find Tylenol Cold on the shelves, when I was sick a few weeks ago it was no where to be found! Not sure why but I think it was recalled or something?

funny you should say that... i was just talking to my mom, who is down in maryland, and she went to the store this morning to get it for herself and said there was absolutely NONE on the shelves!

Re: "safe" cold medicines?

i wound up going to CVS and yes tylenol cold & sinus was recaled (along with a host of other tylenol products). i got the mucinex-d and will use it if i feel like crap in the morning bc i have to be in court at 9:30. nothing worse than public speaking when half your words are un-discernable!
