Godparent spinoff questions
1 - Do you have to have godparents when your baby is christened?
2 - Do the godparents have to be catholic or just christian?
3 - Would it be weird to have a step-parent as a godparent? We would love to have DH's stepmom as a godmother, but not sure if thats taboo since she'll also be a semi-grandparent (she's young).

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
1. Yes 2. My son's godmother is Jewish. My church allowed her to be there for the baptism but didn't put her name on the certificate. Ask your church. 3. If you feel comfortable having them as a godparent...why not?

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
1. Yes, I believe they do have to be there at the christening.
2. When I was my niece's godmother, ny sister told me that her church only required one of the godparents to be catholic. I would check with the church on that. I think they can make their own rules on that.
3. I don't think it would be weird to have a step-grandparent at all. You should have who you want.

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
1. Yes 2. One of the godparents need to be christened and provide proof. 3. It would definitely not be weird to ask a stepparent. Thats great that you are that close! I envy you.

1. yes
2. Check with your church. My church requires 1 godparent to have taken all sacraments (baptized, communion, confirmation) and the other godparent must be baptized at least and they both must provide a sponsor certicate.
3. Not weird at all! Whoever you want to be the spirtual parent of your child is up to you! I know my church doesn't have any rules who can be godparents, but they do make you have 1 male and 1 female godparent.

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
my answer to question 1 is NO. but it probably depends on the church. my cousin is a godfather of another cousin (i'm the godmother) and was in the service overseas for the baptism- his brother "stood in" for him at the ceremony. it wasn't a problem.
2- totally depends on the church. at my church, it is christian, not catholic. but the non-Catholic would be a "christian witness" officially, not a godparent. the other person must have received all the sacraments and have a "letter of good standing" from their home parish.
3- i think that is very sweet- go with whomever you want!
call your local parish to find out "the rules." i would've switched churches if they would not allow someone without all the sacraments or a non-Catholic.
ETA: oops, maybe I misread question 1! you need to have chosen godparents at the time of the baptism.

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
1. Yes 2. Our church required it and our godparents had to get some kind of sponsor certificate from their parish church. 3. Not at all

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
1 - Do you have to have godparents when your baby is christened? Yes..you only need 1 though. 2 are NOT required.
2 - Do the godparents have to be catholic or just christian? Depends on your religion and Church. I have never heard of a baby being baptized without at least one confirmed catholic as a godparent.
3 - Would it be weird to have a step-parent as a godparent? We would love to have DH's stepmom as a godmother, but not sure if thats taboo since she'll also be a semi-grandparent (she's young). No and partly....My cousin's godmother was my grandmother and while it was wonderful it was also not really known because she was "grandma" and not really a godparent too. But this women may be truly honored and feel very special.

Re: Godparent spinoff questions
-I actually dont even think the answer to number 1 is always yes...
Ryan was christened in a christian non denominational church- and we were told we did not need to have god parents if we didnt want them...
2. Depends on your church
3. I was originally going to have my mom as Ryans godmother- (I just felt she would best fit -what I consider- "duties" as a godmother..... duties all pretaining to religion...)
