Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
So long story short, my labor from start to finish with DD was 4.5 hours..with pushing and everything, she came out in literally 4 pushes and 20 minutes of pushing. My OB told me in all his years very very few women have such quick easy labors for their firsts...all the women in my family had lightening quick deliveries. So we're thinking that my next delivery is going to go even faster I have these insane fears that either DH will have to deliver me on the LIE or DH will be at work and I'm going to have to deliver her on my own So my Dr left it completely open but said we could schedule an induction for a week before I'm due just to be safe or just run to the hospital the second i feel anything, but the I'm still frightened that DH won't be home etc....
I know inductions are really not the best option and I'd rather go into labor naturally but I'm sooooo scared and all these crazy thoughts are going through my mind of what ifs a part of me is thinking maybe I should just do it....everyone is saying no, but then again everyone is NOT ME. My first instinct with DD was that the labor was going to be fast and everyone was like nah...and I knew it....

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I was on the fence about getting induced at 39 weeks. It was such a smooth labor and delivery and was so glad that I did it.
I was told that if you had a successful first vaginal delivery, it is much less likely for you to have complications for your second. I basically got pitocin for 2 hours to get me to the point of when I went into labor naturally. Then everything went super fast. I had a baby within 3 hours and less than 15 minutes of pushing! I had a 12 hour labor and 45 min pushing session with DS#1.
If I were you, I would get induced.

follow your instincts. best advice i've ever gotten about parenting and seems to be working so far.
try to put all your fears aside for a few minutes and really think about what YOU feel is best. then go with it!
good luck!

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
No, I wouldn't... but I don't like the idea of inducing if not medically necessary. You still could have a failed induction even if your first was a quick delivery.
I had a relatively quick labor/delivery as well, 7 hours start to finish (first few hours just cramping then 2-3 hours of intense labor and 1 hr of pushing). Once we got to the hospital I had DD 3.5 hours later. Now that I know what to expect I will get to the hospital as soon as anything gets too intense.
ETA: I'm not even pg with #2 yet but I have thought about this. Plus, my parents live in NY and we are in FL so inducing on a certain day would let them to be there for the birth but I just wouldn't feel comfortable with it. I'd want to allow my body to naturally go into labor and i'd be too afraid of the risks with induction, esp b/c my first birth experience was amazing. But you have to do what you feel comfortable with.

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I had quick and easy labors/deliveries.. pushed out in under 11 minutes and in a few pushes with all 3! my girls were the easiest AND I had inductions with all 3 of them.. also, no episiotomy and no tearing with my girls (only 1/2 stitch with my first from a teeny tear that I wouldn't have known I even did)

I would get induced. I was induced with my first and had a great vaginal delivery. I was 40 weeks, 2 days. 80% effaced and 2 cm... I would get induced again in same situation.

I had a really positive experience being induced, but I was also 41 weeks and my body was ready for DD to be out. I guess it's a question of which would be a worse scenario--rushing to the hospital in fear of a short delivery or enduring a potentially long labor?

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I would personally let myself go into labor naturally...that's such an exciting part when having a baby! I pretty much had a "feeling" the night before I went into labor that I was going into labor with my DS...the cramping, contractions, etc...so I warned him to be on call (he works nights)...and I was worried but it worked out....looking back it was so exciting!

I wouldn't elect to have in induction under those circumstances. Inductions can lead to c sections and all of that I wouldn't want to risk it.
I've had 2 inductions and they went well, but if my doctors hadn't told me it was preferred for medical reasons due to a medication I am on, I wouldn't have have them.

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
its a very personal decision but i wouldnt get induced unless there was a real reason. IMO fear of having another short labor wouldn't be enough. while i understand there is a chance, there is equally a chance that you have the same length or longer labor than your last child and that you have all the time in the world to get to the hospital. so i would just let nature take its course.

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I was induced with Samantha at 39 weeks. I was not effaced, dilated or anything. She came only 5 hours after being induced, and in only a few pushes. The L&D nurse told my DH that I was made to give birth.... I have a feeling, had I gone into labor with her on my own, it also would have been a quick delivery... she wanted out, period.
I have no idea about DS as he had to be a c-section.
Having it "scheduled" the 2nd time around was also a g-dsend, because I was able to make arrangements for DD to be watched (and we were also able to know what day the bris would be!). I was very concerend about going into labor with DS and not having anyone to watch DD as the closest person distance wise to us is my MIL and she's an hour away.

I think my biggest fear is that DH will be at work and not how the hell am I getting to the hospital, both sets of parents live at least 45 mins away and that I'll deliver this child in my bathroom with DD watching

Does he work close by at least?? I would talk it over with your doctor, but maybe inducing would be a good idea.

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I'm not a fan of inductions but if it's giving you more anxiety, then you do what you have to ease them. I probably wouldn't do it. I had my second in under an hour, at the hospital at 2:20am, delivered at 2:27am. The plan if we tried for #3 was the minute I was having contractions, head to the nearest hospital. No "do you think this is labor?" & I'd be working from home for the last trimester.
My friend had a baby in under 20 minutes & scheduled an induction for her 2nd. It did take a lot longer & she opted for an epidural (which slows things down) so it took longer.
edited to add: I do know someone who gave birth on in the car on the LIE during rush hour. It all worked out fine.

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I just wrote out my whole story and lost it
Anyway, with DS1 I didn't even realize I was in labor until about an hour beforehand and got to the hospital just in time for 2 pushes and he was out. I felt off at 6AM, by 9AM realized somethign was up, go to hospital a little after 10 and they couldn't even get me in the stirrups, my husband walked in just in time for the first push - and he was born at 10:24AM.
I was SO scared I with DS2 that no one would be around to help or we'd be in the car or something. I was anti induction though. I did go to the hospital with the slightest contractions. I was due 11/8 and on 10/25 felt slight cramps. I went to L &D to be safe and I was 3CM and they swore I was having him but I wasn't contracting at all really. They wanted to break my water to move it along but I refused.
I stayed like that for 4 days until my next exam when the MD said he was struggling. His heart rate was low and she felt my placenta was crapping out. She knew I was anti induction but had been promoting it all along b/c she knew it may be a rough situation with a quick delivery. I agreed to the induction at that point. I went back to the hospital at 11PM and got a slight does of pitocin, was able to deliver epi-free and had him at 3:24AM.
There was something nice about being safe in a hospital, knowing what was to come, knowing Ryan was cared for. DH was home before Ryan even woke up.
It's a personal decision but I wouldn't let the MD bully you into it if you want to go naturally. I really wanted that, but when she said his heartrate was off I knew it was time to take her advice.
I would see how your internals go and then decide. It's hard in the last few weeks to worry - is today the day? where will I be? who will watch the baby? etc.
ETS: I was so scared I wouldn't have a ride to the hospital. DH works in Queens, his parents were traveling at the time and my mom is a teacher so not always reachable. We literally had knocked on a few neighbors doors and asked them to be on our list for help. At work, my assistant had directions of the hospital printed on her bulletin board to give to a driver if I had to go from the office.

Thanks!!! Dr is totally leaving it up to me, he doesn't want to pressure me into anythng..DH works in the city so not close at all...I guess going closer to the day is smarter and see how I'm progressing!

Re: Should I get induced, my own choice, not my DR making me do it
I am in a similar situation and I chose to be induced with this baby. My first was born in 7 hours and my second in less than 3 hours from start to finish. DH works as a cop in manhattan and is sometimes very difficult to get a hold of. I am about 45 minutes from the hospital. Everyone kept saying to me that I shouldn't be induced and I should just go to the hospital as soon as I feel anything. Problem is that with my daughter born in less than 3 hours, I didn't feel anything until my water broke and both myself and the doctor just barely made it to the hospital.
I think it's a very personal decision and it's entirely up to you and what you are comfortable with. There is nothing wrong with chosing to be induced, and you might still have a quick and easy labor with being induced.

I should also say, we had a game plan for everyday once I was full term. The night before we'd reach out to someone and assign them emergency get Jessee to the hospital duty, if necessary It helped a little with the anxiety to know that we had people lined up for each day.
