just wanted to add that I've found 3 apartments on CL. I didn't even bother going to see rentals with a brokers fee bc I wasn't willing to pay an extra month.

We had a legal apartment in our first home and we found our tenants on craigslist. First we had a college student only there for half a year. Our second tenant was there for over 4 years. Found him on craigslist. DH did the screenings so if you had any more specific questions I can ask him.

DH and I would've if we had to pay a whole months rent to a broker. We just dont have that kind of money.

How we got hooked up in our current place is:

I wrote an ad up on craigslist a few months before we were looking to move saying:


Hi, we are so and so. We are getting married soon and looking for our first place together. Maybe you are renting out that place!

This is what we're like.
This is what we don't do (smoke/pets/etc)
This is what we're willing to pay.
These are the things we're looking for etc.

Please let us know if you're renting something and think we'd be a good match.


We got dozens of responses. Our landlord reached out to us.

I have had great luck with craigslist many times for many things.

Our landlord is a lady and we hit it off right away -- if it had been a guy -- i probably would've asked for references or something but I felt 100% comfy with her.

Our first apartment I found on Craigslist. We LOVED it. I specifically looked for a by owner as I didn't want to pay a realtors fee-I'd rather put that $ towards a months rent. Our landlord didn't run our credit but they did have my social if they needed to.

Even when looking (before we moved into our current place) I was still looking for by owner. We looked at 1 place that had a realtor fee but we ended up not taking it.
