REM sleep...what is it exactly?
I think DS sleeps like this 50% of the time. Isn't where they sleep with their eyes still moving. DS's eyes are like half open half closed. Are they actually sleeping? Do they get rest this way?

Re: REM sleep...what is it exactly?
do you swaddle? Do you put him down awake? I help my friends put her twins down a lot. I take one she takes the other. She is just 5 mos. I feed her, burp her, rock her for a tiny bit and then put her down. They sleep on their bellies so I pat her back or butt and she usually settles right down. Soemtimes it takes them 15-20 minutes of crying to fall asleep.

No he does not want to be swaddled anymore. He is 6 weeks old now. He cries too and then when it looks like he is asleep and I put him down he wakes up again.
I don't know what to do anymore? He is awake soooooooo much. I don't know if this is even normal.

Sounds like he is just like Ali, from what I hear DH family when they were kids they didn't sleep too much - so I guess it is normal, at least for her

I don't know what to do anymore? He is awake soooooooo much. I don't know if this is even normal. DD is 6 weeks also and i know what you mean, but the last couple days all she has been doing is sleeping!
when she is awake and fussy at night it takes me a good hour-hour 1/2 to BF her and then rock her to sleep in the glider tummy to tummy. during the day i encourage her to stay up and interact as much as i can with her when she is alert. if she falls asleep, she falls asleep. sometimes she does this after a fussy gassy crying spell, sometimes after a feeding. initially i found she relieved her gassiness by way of atomic farts, now i notice she needs to be burped more often and will fuss until she gets one out.
all i know is that once i think she establishes one routine, it changes the next day!

Re: REM sleep...what is it exactly?
Bryan does this all the time esp when he was a newborn I though thats just the way he sleeps 90 % of the time. I heard somewhere that babys spen most of there sleep in REM sleep, it looks funny though because it looks like he eys are glazed over and crossed because he is a asleep with them half open. As he got older he started to spend less time like that and more time with his eyes fully closed. Either way it was sleep but it was easier to awaken when in REM sleep.

Re: REM sleep...what is it exactly?
My son naps like that all the time! I think it is normal and they are really sleeping.
Oh, and he slept horribly in the beginning and rarely napped. He is getting a lot better now. Some babies just dont sleep well.

Re: REM sleep...what is it exactly?
Not a parent but, I work as a sleep tech. Rem sleep is dream sleep. You are sleeping in Rem sleep, but it is not a deep sleep. That is why you wake up sometimes out of a dream. Sleep stages go from Stage 1, 2, 3, 4 then Rem. Adults rarely go into stage 4 but kids almost always do. That is why it is so hard to wake up a kid, stage 3 and 4 are a very deep sleep that kids enter alot through out the night.
Your body and muscle tone get very relaxed during Rem sleep and your eyes may move from side to side. Rem is very good for everyone, because it completes your sleep cycle. People who usually have sleep apnea or other sleep problems don't get to Rem. They usually stay in stage 1, and 2 all night long. This is because they keep waking up and are not able to complete there cycle.
I have seen many baby's sleep with there eyes half open, It is normal!!
Sorry for the long explanation!!!
