Bathroom tile

Do you think it is worth extra money to have the tile in the bathtub or shower extend up to the ceiling, or is 6ft high enough? Why would you have it extend up if you think it is worth it....just curious!

I am trying to figure out the same thing.
I can't imagine it would cost much more unless you are using $100 tiles.Chat Icon
Most recent bathrooms I've seen go all the way up. My current bathroom tile stops right below the shower rod.

I would imagine it's easier to not have to paint that little spot between the ceiling & the tiles! Chat Icon

Re: Bathroom tile

One benefit is that there is usually a LOT of steam and moisture at the top of the shower, even if you have an exhaust fan. Even exterior paint will eventually start to show the effects if your showers are really hot, for a long time.

exactly. the less 'bare wall' you have in and around the shower area the better.

My DH painted the ceilings in regular primer/paint and it is already showing signs of wear in the shower area --- it's only 18 months .... I'm so annoyed! I told him he had to use special paint in that area. I cannot imagine if the wall was exposed in that area too...

yes definitely... they won't damage the way the a painted all wallpapered wall would be. Don't skimp there, it will always look nicer and is less maintenance in the long run!!

Definitely go up to the ceiling, we just did this and our bathroom before didn't have it up to the ceiling it was gross from water damage black mold was up there and I couldn't reach it (the bathroom was really old too) but anyway I think it looks really nice and elongates the shower. Plus there shouldn't be that much of a price difference.

I have a really crappy bathroom, and I am actually surprised that we don't have any problems with the paint above the tile inthe shower area. And we definitly have moisture issues elsewhere--just not there. It must have been the paint that was used.

Re: Bathroom tile

It never occurred to me to do this when we redid our bathroom a few years ago, but I would probably consider doing it now.

However I do like how ours looks because there's a window inside the shower so the tile trim goes up and around it - it looks really nice.

I did spend extra on super moisture resistant paint though!
