painting an antique wood chair

We have these two huge ornate chairs that we got from DH's grandmother....they're gold and are really a bit gaudy. We got them reupholstered and now want to paint the gold wood white. Do I spray it? Anyone ever do this??

Re: painting an antique wood chair

I plan on doing that with 2 mohagony chairs I have.

You have to lightly sand first for the new paint to grip then wipe clean.

Remove the seat/fabric or use tape and plastic to cover very well.

I probably would spray. I think I am going to go that route.

I am going to plaint them black.

Make sure you do "thin" layer when spraying and do several layers letting it dry before each coat.

Oh don't go crazy on the sanding. Just a light sanding to remove the "shiny" finish so the new paint can grip. . Not like sanding to bare wood. I would do it outside though.
