Gluten free bread
There's lots of info out there about this but DH is on a kick now and wants to eat Gluten Free for the most part.
He says Rye is gluten free but I say not all of them are.
If gluten is in a food will it always say so on the package?

Re: Gluten free bread
DH's cousin has Celiacs and has to avoid gluten. I was speaking with her mom since DD2 tested positive to wheat/barley/oats allergies and she told me that unless it is marked gluten free, assume they have i
I also found this which does state Rye is not gluten free

Re: Gluten free bread
Rye, wheat, pumpernickel, whole grain and white breads.......are NOT gluten-free.
Mainly breads that are made from rice flour or even corn are usually gluten free. You have to read the labels. Gluten Free bread is also not usually mixed in with the gluten breads. They are usually in separate areas.
If a certain product doesnt technically have gluten products in them, but yet doesnt say "gluten free" on the package.......its due to "cross-contamination" and will most likely say at the end "may contain traces of wheat".

Re: Gluten free bread
i'm almost positive that anything that is GF will be marked GF on the packaging.

Re: Gluten free bread
gluten is the protein in wheat, rye, & barley. so no white, rye, whole wheat, etc bread. you would have to find bread made with tapioca, brown rice, potato, corn flour...etc etc
word of warning - its expensive. i pay $5.99 for a small loaf of GF bread.
strict celiac/gluten free diet should also avoid oats since this years oat crop could be growing on top of where last year's wheat crop grew (cross contamination).

Re: Gluten free bread
i dont want to discourage him, and i know u said he wanted to follow the diet "for the most part"...but just a note in case u werent aware - gluten can be found in tons of things..not just the everyday "flour" things you think of.

What breads do you recommend? I was staring at some but wonder about the taste etc.
What about pasta?
thx

The best bread is made by Udi's..it needs to be kept in the freezer, but defrosts in no time at all. Unlike many other GF breads, it doesnt need to be toasted in order for it to taste good. I've seen it at Uncle Giuseppes, Stop & Shop, & WHole Foods - most recently my mom has seen it in King Kullen in Ridge.
My favorite pasta is by Sam Mills - corn pasta. You can find it at Uncl Giuseppes.
