WOw!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of the places we frequent have a lot of violations although some are "not yet rated".

I don't know. If I have gone somewhere for years and never gotten sick I will probably still go.

Some violations are impossible to avoid. My aunt is a judge for the Health Department and she does these hearings. She said that if they came to the kitchen in your house you would get a ton of violations also.

Unless it failed or got a horrible grade, I would still go if it was recommended by others.

Aside from cleanliness, what does the Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene know about good food?

definitely influences where we eat/take out from. anything lower than a B and we will not be dining there.

The pizza place by my job got a "B." I won't eat there anymore. There are many completely filthy restaurants in the neighborhood which are all rated "A." Makes you wonder.

However, who knows if there's really $ getting exchanged under the table to get an "A" rating. It wouldn't surprise me at all if that is happening.

I was just looking at the ratings of the places DH and I eat t yesterday. I was so upset to find that our favorite restaurant had a grade pending and on the NYC health website shows:
"Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
and Live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas."

This was "Our Place" and I dont think I will ever eat there again.

I was so happy to see some of my favorite places around work get "A' grades. I told DH that I was a little upset to see one of the places that I frequent received a "B" but would still eat there. Then DH said, "B means bugs" & I have not eaten there since.

i dont think it would affect me at all. DH works in the food industry and while the letter grades are good. The health inspections also deduct points for say.. a leak in the sink which i dont think affects how clean the food is.

They absolutely do ! I check my favorite restaurants actually.
ETA: Only if the violation is related to something sanitary that relates to the cleanliness of the food.

not one bit. If I like the food and never got sick, I'd continue eating there. Also agree with whats been posted about the ratings system - some places get docked just for stupid things like leaking faucets.

God knows what they do to keep or get an "A" rating too - so I don't put much stock on those ratings. Its a way for the State to make sure restaurants are complying with the health codes/regulations - but personally I don't put much stock on the grade itself.

YES.
I was so surprised when I moved here to learn that they didn't have this system in NYC. It works so wonderfully in Los Angeles. I'm so glad that NYC finally has it, and I'll only eat at A rated places.

honestly I have never noticed a grade posted anywhere! Im suer if I did take notice and saw a bad grade, it would make me think twice before going in.
