Cast Iron...Let's discuss

What size/type cast iron pots/pans do you have?

What do you use them for? Would you be lost without them? What other pieces would you want? Which do you think are a waste?

Re: Cast Iron...Let's discuss

I have a cast iron skillet - 10 inches I think. I have only had it for a few weeks. I like it for eggs, bacon, sausage, steak. Thats all I have done in mine so far. I love that it is oven safe.

I have an enameled cast iron tea kettle. I like it but don't know if it is neccessary. I also have a small enameled cast iron dutch oven / pot. I really like it for chili, sauce, risotto.

I only like Lodge.

I have a 5", 8", 10", a griddle one, and a faijta(?) one.

I NEVER use the griddle one. Pain in the arse to clean. The fajita one I used once after making it in a regular pan and transferring it to the fajita one for decorative purposes. Not enough room to cook on it.

All the others I use regularly.

I had wanted an enameled cast iron pot for a long time! I would have never actually paid for a Le Crouset though. Around Christmas I got a Martha Stewart one from Macy's for around $40!Chat Icon So far I'm loving it. I've used it for coq au vin, meatballs and sauce, beef stew, beef brugandy.

If I'm not mistaken, the Food Ch. recently showcased LODGE cast iron, showing how they are made. Very interesting!!!! They even preseason them!!! Mary

Re: Cast Iron...Let's discuss

I have a no name brand 8" cast iron pan that I inherited from my dad (who got it from HIS dad) and a cast iron dutch oven that my parents got when they got married - that's how long they last. They are fabulous. I also have a cheap set that my sister seasoned for me before she passed away and they are awesome.

I have an enameled cast iron dutch oven that is my current favorite piece of cookware. Maybe because it's red.

I desperately want the le creuset hard anondized cast iron.

I have a Lodge 10" cast iron skillet. Good for eggs, bacon, home fries, steaks, etc. I like it but don't think it's a necessity.

What I LOVE is my enameled cast iron Dutch oven. Mine is the QVC brand "Technique"... it was a birthday gift from my mom who is OBSESSED with QVC, lol. They look like knockoffs of Le Creuset in terms of shapes and colors. I've had mine for 2 years now and use it soooooo often. Soups, stews, casseroles... I've cooked things like pork tenderloin in it and it comes out so moist and tasty. I love how it goes from the stovetop to the oven, and it cleans up incredibly easily. Can't say enough about this item!!!!

I have a 10 inch, it's actuall an Emeril pan! Chat Icon It was a gift & my mom said it was the only one she could find.

Sometimes I think we should have gotten a 12 inch.

I like to blacken pork chops, make steaks, burgers in it.
