it was a must for us.... we wanted a playroom/bar room kinda place in our home. We do not use it for storage, a garage was a must for that!

As long as it made up for in closet/attic/garage space, yes. I need a lot of storage- it's amazing how quickly crap accumulates.

ditto!

Re: Would you buy...

I grew up w/ a finished basement and wouldn't even go to look at a house w/o one -

DH grew up w/o one and couldn't understand why I was such a PTIA about it- until we moved in, and then had our son - THEN he understood, and we and then finished the basement for a TON of extra living space

Re: Would you buy...

We did exactly what you're asking. I wanted a basement so bad, but we found a house without one. I really wish I had a basement...but, we plan on adding to our house, so we'll build a storage room.

Re: Would you buy...

We have a home right now without a basement and we are in the process of buying another one without a basement. I would prefer to have one but it wasn't a deciding factor for us. We just made sure we had an attic and garage for storage

Only if it had a garage, an upstairs, and a good laundry room.

It was a must for us - we have so much stuff and DH wanted a man cave so if a house did not have one, we moved on

A basement was a MUST for us...but that is just us....to each his own...you have to think about what works for you! Good luck!

Agreed!
DH loves having a workshop down there, its extra storage, expansion potential, I like having a laundry room where I dont have to worry about how messy it gets etc. But we both grew up with basements so its all we know!

If it had a garage I'd be able to live without the basement.

Me too.

Yes. My house growing up didn't have a basement. My grandmother's house does and she is constantly dealing with flooding problems when it rains heavily.

I would agree with this.

Although all the cr@p that's in our basement right now could not be contained in a 2 car garage. But then that would just force my husband to have to get rid of some of the cr@p, which would be awesome! lol

Only if it had a garage. I would never buy a house with no basement and no garage.

Re: Would you buy...

For us, a must have, and it must be finish-able (not a crawlspace)

Re: Would you buy...

Yes, considering no houses in FL have basements. As long as it had a garage I would consider it.

Both homes we have owned had finished basements with play area, pool table, bar, laundry room and storage... I grew up with a finished basement as well.

Not a huge fan of them and and next house will make sure to have what we need without one...

I would never buy a home without a basement!

We use it for storage and the kids playroom.

Our friends don't have a basement and they hate it and can't wait to move.

Re: Would you buy...

It depends where the home is. My parents first house Upstate, NY had an extremely damp basement during the spring & fall it has a stream running through it. So they where never able to even use it for anything. There new house Upstate, NY has no basement because of its location. This house is build on top of solid rock, it would have cost them millions to dig out a basement.
There home in Brooklyn has a basement apartment, which is where DH & I live. I love it because we have an affordable apartment option. Growing up my sister & I had our playroom in the basement & our non-formal dining room & living room.

No, only because of resale

basement for me, would never be living space. I hate basements, mine is finished and I don't use it for anything but wash/dryer. so I can do without it, I just dont'want the house to be hard to sell later

For NY, I agree with the above-I don't have a basement and I actually hate them (they creep me out, we never played in ours growing up, blah blah blah), but I live OOS and basements are not very common where I live. But, in NY where almost everyone has a basement, I would be more concerned.
