Choices, Choices. Need Opinions.
We are re-doing our kitchen. I have 3 options and I need opinions on which I should go for.
We got a fabulous deal on the whole thing - under 6000 including top of the line Kraftmaid cabinets (Full overlay, all wood, raised panel, all moulding, drawer systems, soft close.. all the bells and whistles). It was great.. but then I went and changed some things. It's even MORE fabulous now (5 more cabinets, more counter space, better flow) - it's also about $1000 more. Still do-able - but I may wind up having to wait on some other things that we'd planned if I go this way.
The last option is used cabinets. They were in the kitchen of a friend. They are top of the line cabinets that they paid over 12,000 for 3 years ago and there are a lot of them. They are not my style exactly and they have no finish - just plain blonde wood. But - they will give them to us for a SONG - literally under half of the lowest cost new cabinets. This would leave us plenty of money to get some extras we were planning - upgraded counters, better tiles, nicer stools, etc.. And we could always finish them if we wanted.
Option A would be right in budget and would look great.
Option B would be slightly over budget but would give me everything that I love.
Option C would be WAY under budget and would look much better than what I have now.. but would not be what I love.

It's an investment. Kitchens are crucial to a house.
Plus, I feel like you're one of those women who need her own cooking show (you're lucky I don't hunt down your address and show up at your dinner table - I drool at
your recipes and insight on the Food Board) and therefore, I feel you spend a great deal of time in the kitchen and should absolutely love it.

Option B
get what you want! i did my kitchen exactly how i wanted (ok not granite but i got a counter top that looks like it and ppl have to really stare and feel to know the dif and its laminate!)
i LOVE my kitchen i am glad i pushed the designer to give me what i wanted even tho he didnt think it would work.

Option B. You cook and do so much for your family that you should be happy when you do it. Do it right the first time and be done with it. In the long run kitchens do give some money back but really any renovation should be done for the pleasure of the owner. You spend so much time thinking and preparing meals I feel like in this case you should get what you want. If you were only an occasional cook I would feel otherwise.

You could also pay a little to have their cabinets refinished to your taste amd then pick the pulls and do all teh nice counters, stools etc. Best of both worlds I think!

I would do option B. Considering the average cost of a kitchen reno, $1000K is definitely worth it to get it exactly how you want it. You are investing so much already, you don't want to be less than satisfied with the final product. Don't want to be penny-wise, but pound fooliish, so to speak!
Of course, this assumes that the other projects you need to postpone are not urgent, and you can live with things as they are until you can tackle those.
Plus, I know you are doing it for your own enjoyment, but kitchens MAKE the home and are a huge selling point for most people (even non-cooks!), so you can always justify it that way! : )
Option A is my second choice if you can't justify going over budget. To me, a great deal is only a great deal if you are getting something that you will not only use, but that you willl LIKE.

I would choose option B. I know I would regret either of the other two. You should love your kitchen when everything is said and done and based on what you wrote I do not think you would with A or C. GL!!

We actually went back and forth between Consumers and Home Depot.
Ultimately Home Depot was slightly less.. but only because we downgraded our cabinets from Kraftmaid to American Woodmark (still premium finish, full overlay, all wood, raised arch panel, maple cabinets with heavy all wood construction, cushion close drawers and doors, butt close doors). Also - we have a small kitchen so we don't have a whole lot of cabinets.
Here's how it broke down:
7 top cabinets (including 1 double door over refridge and 1 double door over stove.
9 bottom cabinets (including 1 sink base and 1 9" roll out spice rack and a 3 drawer chest)
Both Corner cabinets have lazy susans
Appliance Garage
3 piece crown moulding for all top cabinets to bring the 36" cabinets to the ceiling
light moulding for all cabinets
Base moulding
Corner moulding
dentil moulding
False doors for back of cabinets on island/peninsula
Roll outs for normal bottom door cabinets
My husband is doing the install and the final total with tax came to: $6300 - which is a chunk of our tax return.
The floor will be another $600. Rob estimates the undercabinet lighting, the ceiling re-do w/the recessed lighting and the pendant lights on the island will bring us up another 1000 or so - we're looking at $8000-9000 when all is said and done. And I cannot wait for it to be DONE!
I don't have a lot of 'before' pics because my kitchen was THAT much of a disaster.. but I'll start posting during pics and then after pics soon!
