Spinoff from McFlurries Post
What is the possible issue w/ soft serve...I've never heard anything, and I've been super careful to avoid all the don'ts on the list from my Dr....but soft serve wasn't in the list?
Just curious. TIA

There is a supposed increased risk of the bacteria known as listeria with soft serve ice cream.
Personally, I don't buy it...and would still eat it no problem. But everyone is different.

Ok, thanks...I've given up coldcuts b/c of this... Luckily I prefer Ben & Jerrys pints to soft serve...but since my Dr. didnt mention it,Im not too concerned.

I had not even heard about the soft serve thing until about 20 weeks (or about 20 soft serves) into my pregnancy. . and I basically just kept eating it. .
I tend to get if from places i trust more but have not stopped my consumption .

I think it has more to do with the machines being cleaned properly (and growing the bacteria) than the actual ice cream having the bacteria.
so if you go to a reputable place where they take care of their machines and clean them then it's usually OK to eat.

Most places don't clean their machines regularily. However, if you live near Copiague, the Carvel on Montauk Hwy cleans their machines EVERY night, I used to work there and it was mandatory. So If I am in the mood for a shake or ice cream, I go there.

I won't even throw the number out there of how many McFlurries i had when i was pg with Lauren and she came out just fine and healthy. What are they gonna take next? They took deli meat and now they want to take soft serve....

Apparently listeria can also be found on the inside of soft serve ice cream machines if they aren't cleaned properly. So that's why they say to avoid it.

Im beginning to wonder if there is anywhere where listeria has NOT been ocassionally found!
I feel bad for pregnant women 20years from now, when they know about even more bad things to avoid! There will be nothing left for them to eat!
