Group B Strep
any one have this or know anything about it? My Dr mentioned that I have it and I have never had it before with any other pregnancy nor do I recall being tested for it...so I don't know how they say I have it but of course I googled it and made myself worry even more!

Re: Group B Strep
I don't have it but generally it's really not a big deal. . group B strep is a bacteria that comes and goes in most people. . generally what it means for birth is that they put you on antibiotics either prior to your EDD or in some cases will hook you up to antibiotics when you start deliver. . this is just to ensure that nothing gets passed on to your kid during childbirth. .
many countries don't even test for this (including England) and supposedly their rates of transmission aren't any higher than ours so even if you have it and do nothing chances are it won't be passed on but the antibiotics are an easy and safe way of making sure your LO is safe as possible. .
it's pretty common though and really not a big deal. . might just mean you have to go in right after your water breaks and not labor longer at home

Re: Group B Strep
I had it with my 1st 2 pregnancies but somehow not with this one. From what I understand - it isn't much to worry about. You just have to be on IV anti-biotics when you deliver. If your water breaks, your need to go directly to the hospital and not labor at home (but if this isn't your 1st baby - I assume you won't be laboring at home much after your water breaks anyway - at least my dr told me to go right away because she predicts this baby is coming right out anyway). I had no complications form this with either of my 1st 2 pregnancies....mommy and baby were perfectly healthy!

Re: Group B Strep
i had it with my 1st pregnancy and it was no big deal - I am allergic for pencillan and sulfur so that makes it more difficult - they also run a test because of the allergy for the best drug to use and it goes in the chart. I ended up delivering at the correct hospital so my doctor told me my drug options. It takes 4 hours to get the drugs in - so go tothe hospital as soon as your water breaks - i wated a little while and ended up getting to the hospital at 7 cm -and needed to get an epi to slow labor down to give me 4 hours -i got the epi at 10 cm- but the epi slowed labor down and i got the 4 hours i needed - my son was born perfectly fine ,got to nurse right away and did not have to go to the nicu
if you don't get the antibiotic the baby needs to get it in the nicu was what i was told
also look into the research on probiotics for newborns especially when the good bacteria is taken away from them with the antibiotics - may help alleviate some gas problems
