Recipe Help--Guests!

DH's friend and his fiance are coming to stay with us for the weekend from Baltimore. They're driving up Friday night after work and we wanted to have dinner ready for them. What should I make? I'm not a great cook, but I'm not a terrible one and I'm totally willing to put some elbow grease into it.

DH suggested steaks with bruschetta on top, a salad and homemade creamed spinach--got any better ideas?

I feel like steaks can be easy to mess up because everyone likes them cooked a different way.

What about baked ziti, a salad and garlic bread? It's easy to cook if you just follow a recipe.

Plus you can assemble ahead of time and then throw in the oven when they are close. With steaks, if they are running late, you can't really start them until they get there.

I agree with making something along the lines of a ziti or lasagna. If they're driving, you never know what traffic they may run into and what time they'll actually arrive. You won't have to worry so much about the meal if you do something that is easy to reheat.

If you want meat instead of pasta, I'd suggest chicken cutlets or something like that so you can still do salad, bread, creamed spinach, etc. Steak is kind of tricky to make sure everyone likes how it is cooked and it is something that is best eaten pretty immediately and you don't know necessarily how the timing is going to be with everyones schedules that day... so I say no to the steak but everything else would be fine!

Baked Ziti is a great idea!

Some other easy options are...

Chicken cutlets and mashed potatoes
Chicken parm and spaghetti
Shepard's pie

I'd go with ziti but maybe get a roast chicken just in case. You might also want to have some eggs/breakfast available in case they get stuck and don't feel like eating "dinner".

Re: Recipe Help--Guests!

Thanks, ladies!! I went with crock pot pulled pork since I'm going to be home a little late--I think we'll do lasagna tomorrow!
