assistance needed to make sauce...

So I bought canned whole tomatoes to make marinara sauce to go in my baked penne tonight. I insisted on buying san marzano tomatoes cus I want to see if they really taste better. Anyway, usually I buy crushed tomatoes. But they only had whole. How do I make a sauce with the whole ones? Do I chopped them or blend them? I usually buy crushed because i like the consistency of the sauce when made with crushed. Thanks for any tips! Chat Icon

mash them up in the pot with a potato masher! they will naturally start to cook down and fall apart from cooking them, but help them out with the masher!

This is what I do, or crush by hand in a bowl.

I do it by hand which can get messy or in the food processor.

I mash while stiring instead of "pre"crushing. They will naturally break apart while they are cooking too. I find this is the least messy way. Yummy...I think I want sauce tonight now!Chat Icon

I crush them with my hand over the pot making sure my hand is low enough in the pot so it doesn't squirt.
