Are you doing an amnio?

Just curious... I don't know what to do.

it's not mandatory, right? And doesn't it pose some danger for the baby?

If it poses any danger, I'd rather not...

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

There is a risk to the baby - I think a 1/200 or 1/300 chance - so no, it's not mandatory UNLESS you have some risk factor. Like if you're over 35, they really want you to have one. Or if your 12-week testing shows something abnormal, they might want you to have one to see what the full story is.

If you're under 35 and have had healthy test results, I don't think your OB will even mention it to you.

If you have it done somewhere that does amnios every day the odds are much much higher - like in the 1000s as far as danger to the baby goes.

I had to have an amnio done. It's not something you can just elect to have done. Something needs to be wrong. And even then, you have options.

Im not getting one nomatter what. They usually won't even suggest you have one unless the odds of something being wrong are greater than the odds of the amnio cuasing a mc...which my dr. told me was 1/200.

My mother had my sister at 38, and refused an amnio even though her dr practically insisted she get one, she just had to sign saying she did not want one. My sister is now 16 and perfectly healthy.

It is always your call...if you want one, you can ask for one, if you don't, you can refuse.

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

The only possible reason I would EVER do an amnio is if the doctors told me that MY HEALTH was in danger, and the only way to verify something was through that test.

Besides that, there is absolutely no reason I would do one...nope, no way, no how.

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

nope no way. .and they don't even do them just for age. I am over 35 and my doctor suggested i NOT do one. . only way I would have is if some tests came back really high for a risk for something - otherwise the risk of amnio is worse

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

I had one yesterday. I am over 35 so I did it. All my tests came back fine. The risk is less than 1%. They check the baby right after. Its a choice that you make that is right for you.

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

I am 38 and I am doing it, especially if something comes back wrong on the CVS. RE saw 3 heartbeats on our first ultrasound, so we have 3 babies to worry about. We are going for our second ultrasound tomorrow afternoon to make sure there are still 3 heartbeats.

I'm getting the CVS (very similar to amnio, but doesn't detect spinal cord defects) for age (37) and peace of mind.

My OB was for it in a very diplomatic way, his wife had amnios at age 21. He feels the risks are very few.

I was a never, no way, no how person until I thought my baby was affected. Whatever results we would have gotten we would have kept the baby but being prepared was the best option to me. If Down Syndrome had been found, your pregnancy is automatically high risk. They monitor the baby's heart throughout the pregnancy and cardiologists are there at the delivery. They also recommend certain hospitals which are better for those births.

Yes, there was a risk involved but going 21 weeks weeks without knowing would have been super stressful for me and I think ultimately could have affected my health and the health of the baby.

I'm not trying to be defensive or dismiss anyone opinions but you have to realize this is the most difficult decision to make when you're pregnant and hearing such quick "no" answers without being in that position make me a little upset.

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

do you have a reason to have one????
im 29 and have never been offered one (not yet at least) and i assumed i would only need one if there was a problem. if i needed one for a specific reason i would do it assuming the benefits outweighed the risk.

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

If there is a reason for me to have one, I probably would. But I am not electing to have one (and I wouldn't have one just because of age if that were the case either).

Re: Are you doing an amnio?

As of right now of course i say No. I would rather not. I have had to MC's in the past & anything that poses a slight threat of that for me, obviously i would rather steer clear of. HOWEVER, i do agree with Angela (Mommabear) if my results from my 12week NT scan & bloodwork came back with a high risk of possible Down. I too think i would have the amnio. I would need to be prepared etc. I guess what im saying is i will cross that bridge IF (i pray to God & St Gerard for it to be ok) i have to come to it. You're right and every person is different -- and no matter what, I still stand by my statement for ME.

DH and I discussed this at length, and for us, it would only be done if my health was at risk. It would not change a single thing for us and in reality if there was some abnormality or down's syndrome detected, all that would happen is that I would spend the remainder of my pregnancy depressed and feeling like I did something 'wrong' with my unborn child. The stress level would be immense and perhaps it's just a "ignorance is bliss" sort of situation for us. But it is how we have felt from the beginning. If the baby did wind up being a special needs child of some sort, we would deal with it after the baby is born, and not freak out about it beforehand. Because I likely WOULD have a freak out if we had to do all sorts of testing and waiting for results and being told that x, y and z were possible and STILL not know for sure.

I've known two people who had all the testing done possible -- including amnio and the one who was told their baby would likely have Down's...was perfectly fine. While the other was told her baby would be 100% normal....wound up having a son with Down's syndrome.

But this is just how my DH and I deal with things, and it's something we both 100% agreed on from the moment we learned we were pregnant.
