What did you cook when you were new to cooking?
When I was a kid, french toast was one of the first things I made. I also made fried doughnuts with Pillsbury biscuits and powdered sugar. When I moved in with my husband (boyfriend then) at 21, fried chicken cutlets were big with canned corn and mashed potatoes or Rice a Roni.(Captain Crunch chicken was also a staple.) Then, I started to experiment with cooking (lots of chicken, rice, and jalapeno peppers). My fried cutlets were replaced with split chicken breasts and then I was brave enough to step it up to a whole roast chicken. What about you?

Re: What did you cook when you were new to cooking?
I always used to watch my mom and dad cook. I think my first things were cookies, sauce and hamburgers.

Re: What did you cook when you were new to cooking?
first thing I learned was scrambled eggs. Then I did basic stuff, mashed potatoes, potato salad, tuna, egg..etc.
First made chicken soup since my aunt and grandma were around. Then chopped liver! Weird I know.
Then I progressed to sauce. Now the sauce I made way back when has been perfected now and so have the meatballs. I learned how to boil water for pasta, how to salt it..etc.
I made fried chicken and that took some practice.

Re: What did you cook when you were new to cooking?
My mom taught me when I was a kid how to make chicken cutlets and meatballs. When I went to college, I made A LOT of chicken cutlets, lol. I also then learned how to make sauce, sweet potatoes, steak, and some other things. But it wasn't until DH and I move in together that I really started experimenting.

Re: What did you cook when you were new to cooking?
I must be getting old.. because I honestly cannot remember!
I know I used to watch my dad and help him a lot when I was little. I remember helping do a lot of prep work - peeling potatoes, cutting veggies, mashing, etc..
Actually - I think the first thing I made on my own was probably salad and salad dressing.
When I actually started being responsible for cooking meals for the house I'm pretty sure I did mostly roasts because they were easy. I also learned sauce pretty young.

Re: What did you cook when you were new to cooking?
When I was little I definitely made lots of cookies and breakfast foods. Eggs, pancakes, that kind of thing. And my mom would always ask me to make salads.
In college, I started cooking a little more. Mostly chicken in various formats but I would experiment a little every now and then. After college, I started watching Rachael Ray, so those were probably the first real meals that I cooked and they always took forever!

i didn't start cooking till my 20's. that was just pasta, baked chicken or turkey burgers. later i got braver and began roasting veggies (best discovery ever!) and following recipes in the beginner/intermedate level

I totally forgot that I used to bake with my dad. We would make sponge cake, bundt cakes, brownies.
Now I can't bake to save my life.
