Metformin kicking my arse!
OMG.....I feel like I have a stomach virus! I just spent that last 20 minutes in the bathroom! I did a search and looks like most people started on 1 pill a day for 7 days. My dr never mentioned that. So I have been taking 2 - 1 in the morning and 1 at night. I have an appt on monday, so I will discuss, but is this normal?

Re: Metformin kicking my arse!
i started with just 500 and worked my way up to 1500. but i never had any negative side effects so i upped the dose very quickly. i also take both pills at once (well 3 pills cause mine are 500mg pills). but i hear GI side effects are common until you are used to it.

Re: Metformin kicking my arse!
omgosh i feel your pain! i've been on it for a little over 2 weeks and it's kicking my arse too!! i feel like my stomach is going through a paper shredder and i inevitably end up in the bathroom more than usual it's horrible.
i started on 750mg and then increased to 1500mg. i emailed my dr and asked him if the side effects would go away and he said they should but if not he'll decrease my dose. i have an appt on thurs so if its not better by then, i'm gonna ask for the lower dose.
feel better

Re: Metformin kicking my arse!
I started 1500mg immediately, if I remember correctly and felt nauseous, so I went down to 750mg and felt FINE! I ended up getting pregnant with that amount (along with other drugs)
However, since I started trying after the loss, I increased it to 1500mg again and was FINE! It may take a few weeks to get used to, but it DOES get better! I also take the XR (extended release) version. I heard that helps!

XR definitely helps. I started on the regular one and it was AWFUL for weeks! When I switched to the XR the first couple of days were still unpleasant but I got used to it quickly.

Sorry you're having a hard time.
I started on 750 mg for a week, then increased to 1500 mg. I take both pills with dinner, and have had no side effects at all. I am on the extended release, and from what I've read, this seems to help.

Re: Metformin kicking my arse!
OK, glad to hear that this is normal....just no fun at all! Will mention it at my doctor's appt tomorrow. But I like the idea of taking both pills at dinner. Then by the time it kicks in, I will be asleep!

I started with 1 750mg pill for 7 days and then added in the 2nd pill. My stomach was a mess until the end of the 2nd week. It has been fine since then.

Re: Metformin kicking my arse!
i am on my 5th day of metformin and so far i have only had one bad day with it. I started with 750mg of XR and will go to 1500mg in 2 more days. I have been feeling pretty good...except for one day I went out to eat dinner and had something greasy and just ate too much. boy was that a mistake. I felt so nauseas and my stomach was a mess the rest of the night. I definitely think it helps to watch what you eat when you are taking metformin!

Re: Metformin kicking my arse!
I had to switch meds because it made me so sick. I started at 500 and then progressed to 1500. Along with the constant nausea I had terrible mood swings.
