So, today's the day...

that Gracie is getting vaccinated. She is supposed to get the hep B, DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV. I want to talk to the doctor about spacing out the vaccines. How do I approach this? Did anyone else space them out? What can I do or bring to the doctor's office before we go to make it easier for her?

Also, I told the doctor when we went for DD’s first visit that I wanted to see the box (to make sure no thimerosal was in it) and make sure it was a single dose vial when it was time for DD’s vaccinations. So, today is the day and I am nervous. I don’t want to come off as a crazy person, but I am really scared about all the stuff that is in the vaccine and how my DD might react to it. I know it is better to vaccinate (although some friends have suggested I don’t do it), I am just concerned. Did any other new mommy’s feel this way? TIA

UPDATE: She got two shots and will get two more next month. She was such a trooper and I nursed her afterwards. She is gaining weight and grew 2 inches (I am EBF'ing).
So far no fever, she ate well after the shots and she has been taking a nap for two hours.
I had a LONG talk with the doctor, read the box, got the single dose vials of the vaccines and I feel a lot better. Thansk for everything girls!

I have listened to the debates over it but as a school teacher I know there are a lot of things floating around that the child can be exposed to and in my opinion it is better to be safe then sorry.

Emily didn't respond at all in a negative way to her first few shots. It wasn't until her 5 month shots that she just ran a moderate fever (101.2) and was cranky. But that passed in a day.

If you want to make sure that your baby will be comfortable you can give her a dosage of tylenol before the shots but I personally don't believe in giving the tylenol until after and then only if she shows signs of discomfort or runs a fever.

Actually the FDA (I believe) has made all vaccinations, with the exception of the Flu vaccination, thermisol free for a few years now.

You have the right to limit her vacinations. I would let them know right away that you only want a certain amount given at a certain time. I waited for the MMR for Damien with no problems.

I agree with the pp that you could just nurse her afterwards and she will calm down.

My only suggestion would be to limit the number of vaccs she gets each time. My ped only does two per month-- one on each leg. That way if one leg becomes red/swollen, they know which vacc caused the reaction.

I also second the rec to nurse her AFTER the shots as a comfort, not during.

Good luck! I was so nervous after DS's first shots, I was on edge for like a day and a half afterward. Now I just give him Tylenol to head off problems and hardly think about it. I t really does get better, the first time is the hardest!!!

Just hold her upright as they are giving her the shots. That always helped my kids. They always felt more secure being in mommies arms and sometimes, they didn't even cry!

Good luck! and have that tylenol handy. I always gave them their tylenol in the ped's office or in the car before we pulled away and it made things alot better and sometimes I saw little/no reaction.

My DD just got her 4 shots yesterday, it broke my heart to see her scream but she was a champ. She stopped crying as soon as i picked her up.

She had 2 shots in each leg, and we gave her tylenol before the doc administered the shots. So far she's just been a little more tired than usual and is running a 99 degree temp.

I would talk to your ped about your concerns, I am sure he hears/heard just about everything from new mommies. Also do some reading about thermosol in vaccines and autism, there's no proof. I don't think the dr would decieve you if he told you there's none in it.

I would rather be safe than sorry, if the whole world had the medical technology and resources we do, there would be no more killer diseases. All it takes is more and more mommies in the states not to get their kids immunized and the diseases somehow make it here for an outbreak to start again. The diseases do come here but as a whole we are immunized and they don't start up again.

Get armed with info and talk to that ped, i'm sure you'll feel better

I was so afraid for her first shots (and 2nd, and 3rd) but it is not that bad.

Dd had no reaction at all and only cride for a minute, and was fine after.

I did question about thermasol although I did not ask to see the box. You should if it will make you feel more comfortable.

Thanks ladies! I feel so much better after reading all of the responses and advice.

We go at 3PM today and I will let you know how my little Gracie is after we come home. I will only get two today one in each leg, then two the next month, and so on.

There is no reason for her to have that many at once.
Do you know if she got Hep B in the hospital? If she didn't then you can wait. We won't give Miranda that until she is ready to start school.
She gets one shot at a time. I do take her in every month though but to me its worth it.
Remeber you are the parent and you are in charge. Don't feel nervous for protecting your daughter.

I don't know if its only my ped. that di this but my DD went to the Ped e very month and got 2 shots every month until 6 months old then after that it was every 2 months until a year. Now that she is a year she has all her shots until she starts school.

Once again insurance dictates care! My DD goes to the PED for well visits every 2 months, insurance won't pay for the once a month visit. It stinks, she had to get the 4 shots yesterday since we can't go back til she's 4 months old.

Our insurance sched is 3-5 days old, 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months etc. IT *****!!

Just wanted to say good luck! My little Lauren gets her first shots next Tuesday! Our pedi office only gives two shots max and that worked out well with my son, who is now two. He never had a reaction to any shot he's had, and he's all up to date.

my ped dictates when we come not the insurance if it calls for her vaccinations every month then insurance covers it.
