Pumping
Question for those BFing. I plan on BFing and was wondering when do you start pumping? Do you do it right away so that DH can have an opportunity to feed? If so, does that count as one of the feedings or do you pump in between feedings??

Re: Pumping
You should not pump until 4-6 weeks. Your baby is the best pump aroound Unless there is a medical reason such as low supply or latching issue, that is totally different. Then you want to start ASAP. Your husband can do SOOOO much for the baby and you. He can change the baby, get him/her dressed, help you put the baby to bed, play with the baby...feeding is really your job for the very beginning. Having my husband come with me to the breast feeding class really helped him to see how his support is necessary for me to be sucessful at breastfeeding and that there is SOOO much a daddy can do. Please let me know when you want to start pumping and I will help you as much as I can. To answer your other questions: You should not pump in between feedings because then the baby will not have enough when he/she goes to nurse.

Re: Pumping
I started about 2 weeks after coming home from the hospital, only because the holidays were right around the corner and I didnt want to have to go into a room to feed her! Took me a little while to get used to it too, so I'm glad I started early, b/c I started work in Jan...

Re: Pumping
I exclusively breast feed but did pump after a few weeks just to be sure I had enough milk. I wound up having plenty and have a bunch in the freezer.

After the baby goes to sleep and you start to feel that full feeling. I used to do it at night, and Genevieve has slept all the way thru since the beginning, so I was able to do it twice before going to bed. And sometimes, if I woke up early enough, I did it in the morning. And then once you build up a supply, you can pump while your SO feeds the baby the bottles milk. HTH

I agree with Michele31. The only thing I would add is to pump immedately after feeding. This will increase your supply, the baby will get enough, and you will have bottles for your DH to feed the baby with. Good Luck!

Re: Pumping
If you pump right after you nurse in the morning you may get some...right now the baby is helping your body to build your supply. Once it is established you can have DH give you the baby a bottle at night..hang in there.
