san marzano tomatoes

What brand do you buy?

I have heard that not all canned tomatoes called san marzano are in fact san marzano tomatoes. Im just curious what you ladies that buy them prefer. And where you buy them.

Also, I have seen some cans that have a photo of a tomato that looks just like a san marzano tomato, but doesn't mention it anywhere. Is it safe to assume these are not them?

:) thanks!

Re: san marzano tomatoes

if they are about $4-7 a can, then they are probably real ....and they need to have a DOP seal on them

i think the brand was cento and i think i bought them at Fairway

These are what I buy. They are about $3/can in Waldbaums. Other brands might have plum tomoato photos on their cans but these say San marzano so I'd think they were. They also sell this and another brand at the italian specialty store. I can definitely tell the difference when I use these.

I read the can when I got home and said grown in USA. So I assume they are fake. I'll buy the cento and give them a try. I also have a can of another brand, can't remember the name. But It didn't say on there where they are grown. It says improted from Italy, but doesn't have that DOP label. Oh well.

Gina- I've used those same ones. I always thoguth it was weird that they don't really have a name, just San Marzano. I didn't notice anything special about them, so I went back to non-San Marzano tomatoes.

I don't want to hijack, but what is superior about San Marzano tomatoes? I've heard of them in recipes but never tried them.

They are supposed to have a better taste. Its the type of tomato as well as the soil where they are grown. Supposed to taste better in sauces. Thats what i read anyway... lol. I usually just buy store brand or heinz canned tomatoes and started hearing about san marzano, so I figured I'd give them a try.

I actually like this brand, I buy them pretty regularly. I like Cento too, but I don't think these are bad.

Re: san marzano tomatoes

The taste is totally different.. San Marzano are sweeter and I prefer making sauce with these tomatoes.. the other ones are more acidic imo
