How many follies with IVF?

I am trying to understand IVF as it may be in our future. I know in a perfect world that each follie carries 1 egg. For those who produce multiple eggs for retrieval how many follies did you have?

Every cycle is different. How many follies you produce depend on many things, your dx, age, how you respond to meds, protocol, the moon etc.

Also, 20 follies seen on the sono before IVF does not make 20 mature eggs ready to be fertilized. For example only. My first fresh IVF, after 10 days of moderate stim, I had 15 follies, only 11 eggs were retrieved, out of those 9 were mature and 7 fertilized, 4 made it to blast. I was considered a “good Responder”

Some women with PCOS have 30 eggs, and less than a quarter are mature, some DOR that may have a low stim protocol only get 3 eggs, but all 3 are perfect qualitiy. It is so hard to judge. Unfortunately much of it is trial and error. But the most important factor is quality of the embryos.

Thanks for the info. I was just curious as going through IUI and coming up with only 2 good follies, it had me wondering.

What happened to the good old days where 2 people had s e x and BAM a baby was created.

the meds with IVF are different than IUI meds. they purposely stimulate you more so you produce more eggs. with IUI, i got a max of 4 follicles. with IVF, they retrieved 17 eggs and 14 fertilized.

It definitely depends. I have egg quality issues. With my IVF cycle, they thought they were going to be able to get 9-10 eggs. Unfortuantely, they were only able to retrieve 5 and only 2 fertilized normally. However, there was 1 good one in there and my cycle was successful.

So much is dependent upon the protocol chosen, the quality of your eggs and even sometimes the quality of the sperm. Someone can make a lot of eggs but very few fertilize or the embryos severely fragmented. In my case they retrieved 16 follies, 13 were mature and all 13 fertilized with ICSI. My center normally prefers to do ICSI even if there is no male IF at play as the fertilization rates are normally greater...something you might want to consider.

I can't stress enough the importance of the right protocol. Someone might only retrieve 5 follies with one protocol and then 15 with another. Bottom line though...its better to have less eggs with better quality than lots of eggs with poor quality.

i had about 20-30 follies on my last scan 2 days before ER. they retrieved 18 eggs, all were mature, and all fertilized with ICSI. we ended up putting two perfect embies back, I got pregnant with twins, but only one matured, and I'm 16w pregnant with a singleton. we have 8 perfect frosties as well!

it does depend heavily on both your d/x and your protocol. i have PCOS and we tend to be great responders to IVF since we tend to under-produce and dont ovulate, or overproduce and hyperstim. but with IVF the edge of hyperstimming produces a lot of usuable eggs!

I had 26 retrieved ended up with 21 fertilized and was able to freeze a total of 9..I put back 2 perfect embies and I am currently pg with one and will be 8 weeks tomorrow

8-12 is the "ideal" number of mature eggs. The more you get the more you compromise quality. Cornell strikes for 10 mature eggs which they say is the best amount for best quality. That's their phrase, lol...

IVF w/PCOS is a different story since women with PCOS produce lots and lots of follicles. If you don't have PCOS, please don't compare yourself to those women...

ETA: I had 5 IVF's and I average 12-15 eggs (mature)..I don't have PCOS (dealing with MF) and I am labeled as a very good responder using low stimms (I stimm for 7 days only)...
