need advice...
sorry if its long
So, background is that I went off the pill in May and then started TTC in August. After bcp my cycles were all long and irregular, so although we were TTC it wasn't like we tried for that many cycles. I went to my gyno who found cysts on my ovaries and said I had PCOS and suggested I see a RE. Re sent me for bloodwork for PCOS/Thrombo and sent DH for SA. DH's results were normal, mine came back mostly normal as well...a few minor issues..but no clear evidence of PCOS.
Saw RE again yesterday, and even though I am not showing chemical evidence of PCOS I am still having all the symptoms so he is treating me as if I have it. He gave me a prescription to Metformin. However, he doesnt want me to start taking it until I go in for an HSG and he sees the results. I guess he wants to see some more definite answers of whats going on with me since the bloodwork looks fairly normal.
Dh and I are kind of feeling like we would like to just get my cycle regular with the metformin and try bd a few months on our own before we move on to other steps since we hadn't tried very long before. Now, I called 3 different places for the HSG and I am having a hard time getting an appt so I am getting frustrated that its more "waiting" that I have to do.
So I guess my questions are:
For girls who had an HSG done, did you have it done early on with your RE? or only after you tried other things that didn't work?
Do you think its okay to tell RE that I wanna wait with the HSG and just try getting my cycle regulated first, or should I just trust him and go get it done?
sorry if I am rambling. I just am feeling confused/frustrated.

Re: need advice...
The HSG and getting blood drawn for hormone levels were the first things that I had done in my string of endless RE appts.

Re: need advice...
i had the HSG done within the first 2 months seeing the RE. everything else had come back normal and before wasting time doing a bunch of IUIs, my dr insisted we do it. i am glad that i did because it gave my dr a lot of useful information and helped to move the process along. if it comes back normal, you can at least rule that out and i heard you are more fertile afterwards. maybe talk to your dr and see if you can at least start it. i am not familar with that drug or why he might say to wait.

Re: need advice...
dr. B recommended an HSG for me but at the time my insurance sucked and i wouldve had to pay out of pocket so we held off. my bloodwork was typical PCOS so we moved on without it. in the year that I saw him i never actually had it done. i did get pregnant twice (both chemical) and eventually got my sticky BFP from IVF. i guess that's why he never ended up ordering it even after my insurance was better.
one thing i will note, as far as waiting to go get it done, unfortunately waiting is one of the MAIN parts of infertility. theres no way around it. no matter what you are doing you will somehow find yourself waiting for one thing or another - whether its an appt, a procedure, a med to work..etc... its all a big test of patience!
good luck with whatever you do!

Re: need advice...
I had it done with my OB before I even saw the RE. I don't have PCOS, but my cycles did take awhile to get back to normal after getting off the pill. I think it's a very important test because if your tubes are blocked anything else you will do (meds, IUI's, etc) will be useless. I had a friend who had blocked tubes and wasted a few months on IUI's before she found out.

I totally agree with this. I wouldn't want you to try IUIs and find out after your tubes were blocked. Often if there is a blockage the HSG can clear it up. I had mine done at Long Island Diagnostic Imaging if that helps. I had trouble finding a place that would do it too.

I agree also the HSG will show if your tubes are clear, and rule that out right away. If you're taking fertility drugs, they won't do you any good if your tubes are blocked.
I had mine done at NRAD and was able to get an appointment very easily - try them?

Re: need advice...
ok thanks ladies! I guess you are all right, I should just go get the HSG done so I don't waste time doing other things if I have some kind of blockage or something.
Dr. B recommended Nassau Radiology and they could get me in on Monday, but I would have to take the day off since I live in the city and I just can't take a whole day right now. All the places in the city that he recommended can't take me for a few weeks I think i will just call him and see if there are any other places I can go.
Thanks!

you can still BD before you get HSG done, so waiting for HSG is not putting you on hold. I also think that HSG is important ( even though it hurt like ****** ). and I think it is OK to tell RE that you want to try natural once your ovulation is regulated. He will probably not like it, but in the end it does not matter.

I had mine done at NSUH, so maybe a hospital near you in the city would be good?

I just want to say that Dr B gave you an excellent rec - Nassau Radiology is amazing. I've had many tests done there (including an HSG) and they are extremely professional and very organized. Even if you can't go now, you might need to sometime in the future - llike for your baby's sono!

Re: need advice...
I had an HSG...it can only be done during certain times. We did it b/c we wanted to make sure there were no blockages or anything. I had zero pain and all came back fine...it was not bad at all You can only go 7-10 days after AF arrives. The waiting is something you will learn to deal with....certain things are out of our control and we can all tell you how patient you learn to be.

I had mine at NRAD as well...very nice people...no problems getting an appt. Good luck to you...I would def. get it if I were you. If you have a blockage...medicine and all is going to be a waste.... to you!

Re: need advice...
The order of things I've had done so far are:
First Appointment - Basic BW for DH & Sono for me
Then on CD 3, BW for me (with genetics testing)
Then a week later, SA for DH and HSG for me
We did all the basic testing before beginning to discuss any protocols.

Re: need advice...
HSG, day 3 labs and sono even before TTC. HSG determined endo and a blockage so it was good I found out and didn't waste time.
