Home Robbery

A co worker's home was recently broken into
while she was at work. Since then she is
frightened to be in her house, and wants to
move, anyone have any ideas how I can
help her...........

Re: Home Robbery

Having had my house robbed, the only thing I can say is that time is what helps. I wanted to move out of NY after it happened, but it is not realistic & this happens everywhere

Re: Home Robbery

She should definitely talk to a therapist. If you need a rec. for a psychologist, I can give you one. I am one and know a bunch of great ones. there are some excellent treatments for phobias/anxieties.

Re: Home Robbery

We were robbed back in November, and time is the only thing for me that helped. Well, we also got an alarm system. Though in my eyes, if they want to get, they will.

We were also robbed during the day while we were at work. It is one of the most horrible feelings when you don't feel safe at home anymore. I still want to move, and I can't wait until we can. I feel much safer with the alarm, but there's still a part of me that will never feel safe again unfortunately. I know it happens all over, but until it happens to you...

It's just not something I'm willing to just accept and go on with my day, you know! Honestly, there really isn't much you can do. Just be there for when she wants to talk. I'd say for her to stay with you, but that will only prolong the scared to go home feeling.

I hope she feels better.

Also, I just wanted to add that I have 2 big Siberian Huskies and it didn't matter. They still broke in! Chat Icon So I can't even recommend getting a dog!

We have 5 dogs & the same thing. Broke in during the day...dogs & all. I have wanted to move off LI for a while & this just magnified that feeling.

I live in NC and it happened to me so I'm sure it doesn't make you feel any better about where you live! Chat Icon

Re: Home Robbery

Hi Again, my first reply just went of the screen. Thanks for your imput, which I passed along, she is relieved a little to know
that her feelings are "normal" but still wants
to make a move. This happened to her
twice years ago, she was much younger, sure
it was a teen down the road, the house was
small, and her neighbors her friends, and
she did get "over" it in a fashion. This time
it had a profound effect. The way the door
was kicked in seemed so violent. Her house
now, is larger, lots of windows, doors and
a little secluded. She lives with her husband
who has taken it a lot better than she, men
do. She sleeps badly, doesn't like the nights,
checks the house each time she comes in,
put double locks on, etc. I know for sure if
was alone, she wouldn't stay, and would like
something smaller, more secure. Like you
said time has to pass, but she will never feel
really secure again, I don't think. They don't
only steal your belongings, they steal part
of you,I guess we have to try to cope as best
we can. I hope you get your security back,
stay safe. Thanks for sharing.
