So scared of what's to come...

I think I have asked this before, but is anyone else so nervous about the labor and birth that it is overshadowing actually having a baby soon??

I feel awful because I am so afraid of the pain, the needles, the hospital (these are HUGE fears of mine) that I cant focus on the fact that pretty soon I will have my daughter here. And it makes me feel so guilty that I cant focus on the true joy of it.

My fear is HUGE and I literally cry about it every day. I am so afraid of the unknown! Was or does anyone else feel like this at all?? I feel like such a horrible mom already. Chat Icon

it's completely normal especially when this is your first.

I was so scared but honestly it wasn't so bad, although for me that epidural made everything so much better.

Re: So scared of what's to come...

We just attended a four week class on labor & delivery & baby care. It answered all of my questions (and more!) and I feel like I'm as prepared as I possibly can be for the experience. It was taught by a labor & delivery nurse who was very knowledgable from our hospital. We also took a tour of the labor & delivery & maternity units.

Would you consider taking a class like this? It might help you feel more prepared.

Are you planning on having an epidural? That would take care of a vast amount of the pain you're nervous about!

I am definately planning on getting the epidural but when I think about it, I am afraid of the epi itself as well. Most people tell me by the time comes to get the epi, I will welcome it and not think twice about the needle but I just dont know.

I was so scared too, especially of the epi but it did not hurt at all and labor was not nearly as bad as I made it out to be in my head... You will be fine, millions of women do it every day!

Re: So scared of what's to come...

I am thankful that the needles are the last thing I am scared of. I have been poked and prodded so many times for blood tests recently, I feel like a human pincushion. I had a record number of 8 tries with an IV needle the last time I was in the hospital. I went from floor nurse to head nurse, to lab tech to anaesthesiologist to doctor. Their next attempt was going to be in my neck!!!! Then, for other bloodwork, they stuck me once (thankfully) but drew 17 vials of blood. Yikes!

Don't be afraid of the needles, just think - It could be worse!

Re: So scared of what's to come...

I WAS like that until I took hypnobirthing and it changed everything I felt about labor, delivery and birthing a baby. I felt totally calm at the idea and was actually amazed at what my body was made to do. The needles..well you don't really need needles if you have a natural birth. You might need one but it isn't like you are a pin cushion.

Fear can actually make the experience so different...If you are afraid your body can't function properly and concentrate on birthing a baby..because it will be working on all that edreliane (sp?) in your body. Not understand what is happening in your body and with your baby is just not something you need to go thru- there are so many resources to help you with this. Take control of the fear. Take a Bradley class or a Hypnobirthing class. You would be shocked at just how "unscary" it can make things.
