Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
I am contemplating using very nice disposable plates, napkins, etc. and going buffet style.
Do you think that is ok and we will have Christmas Formal?

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
My parents always do informal for Christmas Eve (they host my dad's side of the family, then Christmas Day is my mom's side and is more formal). It's mostly finger food and just enjoying each other's company.

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
In my family Christmas and Christmas Eve are both formal. The good china is put out as well as the crystal and stemware.

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
Honestly, I think if there are more than 12 people than buffet and disposable and casual is totally the way to go -
WHO CARES if it's 'formal' and you're eating on fine china? It's Christmas? It's just supposed to be a good time !!

I'm for paper all the way. Who the heck wants to wash dishes for Christmas.

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
For Christmas Eve there are 36 of us, so we do informal ... Buffet-Style served with nice sturdy paper goods.
For Christmas Day, there are only 10, so I do a formal Christmas Dinner Menu & Setting.

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
I don't use my gorgeous china and crystal enough...If I was hosting I would do formal both days! That is what my mom always did and will be doing this weekend!

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
We are informal to the max. To the point of almost being trashy this year!!!! I've got aluminum hotel pans, paper plates, plastic cups, plastic cutlery.. I'm all about making it a little easier on me. Especially when I have to whip into Santa mode the second the guests leave!

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
We spend Christmas Eve at my mom's and then my grandma's and it's all disposable. We are not traditional...we have had KFC, baked ziti, chicken parm, and many other different types of food. This year, we're doing a party hero! My fam believes it doesn't matter as long as every one enjoys the food and it's a relaxed and joyful atmosphere for everyone to be together. No stress on who's cooking what, or when everything needs to be cleaned, etc.
On Christmas, we go to DH's uncle's. There it's extremely formal, so it's the total opposite side. The last time I was there, they had hired someone to serve and clean, so that might be why it's easier to do it that way in this case.
If I were to host (thank goodness I'm not yet!), I would not make it formal. I'm all about being comfortable and enjoying the time with each other, not worrying about dishes and when different parts of the meal get served, etc.
To each his/her own!
IMHO, go for the disposable. You can then enjoy the holidays, and honestly, if someone were to judge, then they truly don't understand the meaning of holidays and family.

Re: Formal or Informal for Christmas Eve?
I'm doing a combo using china and real silverware but using plastic cups and paper napkins and tablecloths. I just can't do everything! Plus I hate washing glasses and I don't think I have enough matching ones!
