4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
Hi everyone,
Well the good news is that we just found out this past weekend that my wife is 4 weeks pregnant! The bad news is that she just started spotting today. How concerned should we be and why would she be spotting? She was a little stressed out today at here job and she thought this may have contributed to it. She's a nanny. Thanks!

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
tell your wife to relax and put her feet up.
the spotting could be contributed to anything or nothing.
i spotted at the 7 week mark. it was brown (sorry tmi esp for a guy... but your asking and you should know). usually brown is old blood.
if it's red and clotty or gushes she should make a dr appt.
even though my spotting was brown and not that much, it was still very scary so I made an appt anyway and everything was OK.
Since she's only 4 weeks... it might be early for them to see much... but perhaps she could get a few beta blood tests to see what her hcg numbers look like, and that they are doubling as they should be.

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
has she had her betas yet? if the doctors confirmed the betas are high and rising appropriately, i wouldnt worry too much about the spotting. if she hasnt i would def want to get the bloodwork done!!

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
Thanks ladies. The spotting has been a slight brown discharge. My wife's sister and mom also had spotting when they were pregnant so we are hopeful this is nothing serious. Tomorrow we will ask about her betas. What should her beta #s be at this stage of the game? My wife's pregnancy test was this past Saturday and the dr said it was a strong positive. She also had blood works done on Monday for her progesterone and estrogen levels so I dont know if they would have any info on her beta # from this blood work along with from her pregnancy test. How soon do they start testing for betas? Thanks!

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
the numbers themselves dont matter, it only matters how they rise and double. but if you never had a second beta done then they wouldnt have that info. im surprised your doctor didnt repeat the test as soon as the first one came back positive. maybe they did run a beta on monday too if she had additional bloodwork. most REs do a first beta and then if its positive for pregnancy they repeat the test 2 days later to make sure the HCG is doubling. regardless of that brown spotting is usually nothing. if it stays brown and goes away and isnt accompanied by cramps its probably fine.

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
They actually did a 2nd pregnancy test 2 days later on Monday and this confirmed the pregnancy. They didnt mention beta or HCG, but then again my wife didnt ask for this info so they never bothered to tell her. We'll have to find out tomorrow. I am assuming the #s had increased or we probably would have been told otherwise. Thanks again!

My wife's (Cathy) HCG went from 104 on 12/18 to 338 on 12/20. How do those #s sound? Thank you.

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
I'm 4 weeks, 5 days pregnant and saw a little spotting yesterday evening. I called my RE right away and she said that a little brown or pink discharge isn't abnormal, and that they don't know what causes it. She told me to go to the hospital if I start having cramps worse than menstrual cramps or if I start soaking through sanitary pads in half an hour. Other than that, I should relax as much as possible, keep hydrated, and come in for my regularly scheduled sono next week.
Btw, your wife's beta numbers are perfect! Congrats!

Re: 4 weeks pregnant and spotting.
I spotted for the first three months. I'm now 8 months pregos. Tell her to rest and see your doctor. Its normal for some women to spot for the first few months of pregnancy. However if she had any issues getting pregnant or keep a pregnancy she might just want to take it easy until you guys get checked out.
