Re: How did you start out running??

I decided last year (Dec. 6th to be exact!) I wanted to a run 10k. I signed for the 10k that was a part of the Long Island Marathon Festival of Races in May.

I ran the winter on the treadmill. I started out with 1-2 miles (alternating sometimes walking and running). As I felt comfortable I would add mileage.

I just recently ran my second half marathon! Chat Icon

Re: How did you start out running??

I just did my own thing at my own rate. When I started out years ago I was really overweight & out of shape. I started out doing my own intervals....jog 3 minutes, walk 1 minute and I would repeat that 5 or 6 times. I did this for a few weeks and then bumped it up to 7 or 8 times. After that I increased my jog time...4 minute jog, 1 minute walk and so on.

Re: How did you start out running??

strangely enough it was because i picked up a "runners world" book... when i was 16 i had a job after school of shelving library books (yes the most boring job ever) so i picked up this running book and there was a 10 week plan to become a runner...let me tell you i was in no way an athlete and i remember i could not even run the mile in gym class under 12 min....so i was a total beginner. the first week you walked 4 min, and ran 2 min for a total of 30 minutes, then so on, increasing the running each week versus the walking... after that i took up running as my main source of exercise. i lost a lot of weight from this, but one thing i always screw up on is diet which causes me to yo yo a lot.. i'm working on that now! haha... but still running, im not a long distance runner but i have ran a half marathon before, was tough but managed to finish in 1:56:53! you can do it, good luck!!

Me too, and I LOVE it. I used to run, before kids, but I was in no shape this time to just jump back in to a 30 minute run. The couch to 5k is great because it's interval running that slowly builds up your endurance.

I downloaded the free podcast on my iphone and use that. After about a month on the program, I knew I was committed, so I just went out and bought some coldweather running gear and it's GREAT for running outside in the cold! But, it's a big $$ investment for the clothes, so make sure you are committed before you make the leap... or, at least... get them on sale!

I made my own run/walk program and then switched over to C25K.

In the summer, when I hope to resume again, I will either start it back up or run by feel. I have come to terms that there is nothing wrong with walking on a run!

Re: How did you start out running??

I had an upcoming test that required a running section...so to prepare I started out by just running around the block at a steady pace...did that for a week or two and then did 2 laps around the block....did that for a week or two and steadily increased until I reached a 5 mile stretch of solid running (the test I was taking required a 4.5 mile run with 20lbs of weight in a backpack).

Re: How did you start out running??

I have a lot of family members who run and they are in the best shape, so they inspired me to start. I started out slowly. The couch to 5k is a good way to begin. Good luck! It's so much fun!
