I'm sure even the best of cooks have an embarrassing mishap or two! This may not count but...

I am so bad at boiling eggs. I can't even count how many times I thought a boiled eggs was done and then surprise, surprise...yolk

I was having a dinner party and burned the effing vodka sauce because I wasn't watching. I don't care what anyone says.. you can't salvage burnt sauce.. it just permeates the whole effing batch. I had to go out and BUY vodka sauce from the store. It was depressing.

Re: Ok bad cooking spinoff right here: what have you burned?

on the food board, i mentioned that i made cake balls... i called them "truffles"

well, it's because the cake stuck to the pan and it was ruined for regular cake.

luckily, those cake pops are so darn popular, i was able to save what i had baked.

in learning to make bread... i can not tell you how many bricks i've baked. i'm talking heavy dense bricks... you can build a house for the homeless with this stuff... i bet they are greatly insulated because they were so dense. my poor family... they ate every single one. i love them

When I lived on my own I cooked a hamburger in a frying pan & burned it. There was so much smoke that the fire alarm that was wired to the security system went off...being a tenant, I couldn't answer the phone to tell them that all was OK so the fire dept showed up to inspect my poor, burned up hamburger...and to yell at me Chat Icon

Re: Ok bad cooking spinoff right here: what have you burned?

Well...this isn't really a "cooking" story really but it involves the oven/stove.
I set the ovens self cleaner for the first time since I've been living in my apartment (for a year at that point). The timer said it would take three hours so I went into the living room to watch TV. I ended up falling asleep and a horrible smell woke me up. I jumped up to see the kitchen FILLED with smoke and the smell was questionable.
I run into the kitchen to find my utensil holder (which I left on top of the stoveChat Icon) melted and toppled over. The holder itself was stainless steel but what I didn't know was that the bottom was plastic. It melted the bottom and all of the utensils inside that were plastic. I had to shut it off and wait for everything to cool down and harden..then I had to scrape off the plastic from the stove top. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Ok bad cooking spinoff right here: what have you burned?

I was drunk once and wanted to make tortellini alfredo (an Archer Farms mix from Target) which in itself was questionable at 2am. I fell asleep w/the mix on the stove and it BURNT so bad to the pot it took weeks to get the pot cleaned for days for the smell to go away.

Re: Ok bad cooking spinoff right here: what have you burned?

i was pregnant and home on bed rest (not really relevant but i am trying to blame this on preggo brain Chat Icon ) I was planning on making stove top stuffing but since it doesnt take very long I decided to prep it and just turn the microwave on when DH walked in. When he got home I put the microwave on and went into the bathroom. Four minutes later DH wanted to know ***** was burning in the microwave. The stovetop and the plastic container I had put it in was on fire and melting in my microwave. I forgot to add the water and butter.Chat Icon In my defense my thinking was that I didnt want to preadd the water and the butter since it might get all mushyChat Icon I had to throw the microwave out and it took weeks for the burnt plastic smell to leaveChat Icon Chat Icon

On Thanksgiving, with my whole family here I torched the marshmallows on top of my sweet potato casserole. I mean like ON FIRE. Put them in the broiler, walked away for a minute and bam!

Luckily I just ran outside with it, put the fire out, scooped it off, added more marshmallows and redid it. Came out perfect lmao!

Re: Ok bad cooking spinoff right here: what have you burned?

I've burned so many things in the past, but I thought of a friend when it came to this thread...

She wanted to heat up some food that was in a plastic leftover container. She put on the oven and put the container in...

Yep, fire alarm, horrible smell and melted plastic all over the oven! Chat Icon Chat Icon

cookies... its very deceiving, i usually take a look and see they are underbaked and then will leave it in there for a few more min, next thing i know they are burnt.
