Cord Blood Banking

Are you doing this?
Who did you use and any reason why you choose them?

I have spoken to CBR and Viacord. Are there any others to look into??

I really want to do this, my DH doesn't though!

I "heard" you can't use it for that baby, but if you had another one you can potentially use it for that baby. I remember reading that somewhere. I need to do research on it too - it's almost $2K and with 2 babies that's $4 Chat Icon so I really have to make sure it's worth it before we move forward. I'd be curious to know how long its good for too. It would be great if anyone who has done it could post more info! Chat Icon

I did it for my 3 kids. I used Viacord. I felt very confident that I was making the right decision based on all the back-up information they provided to me. I still receive regular updates in the mail and they call me to see how things are going from time to time. I'm very happy with my choice.

Of course you can use it for the baby who's cord blood you are banking. They have payment plans too if that helps? The technology has really come a long way.

I just pulled this off of Viacord's site.

Today, cord blood is used in the treatment of over 40 life-threatening diseases, including a wide range of cancers, genetic diseases, immune system deficiencies and blood disorders. Cord blood is being used in the treatment of more and more diseases.

Here is a link to the future potential of stem cells.

http://www.viacord.com/why_future_potential.htm

ETA: you can store the blood for as long as you want! 10, 15, 20 years even!

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We just did public cord banking...according to my dr, if there was no family history of any of the diseases then our chances were slim to none that we would need it.

They offer a discounted price for twins. I'm not sure how much of a discount but it is not double the price of one if that helps with your decision.

oh yeah it will be even more for you!

It is good for however long you continue to pay to store it.
They both cost the same per year $125. CBR locks in that rate for 18 years and Viacord does for 25 years.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We did a lot of research on this and I finally told my DH he should decide but I was leaning no. He agreed and we decided not to. It's still too early to know how much they claim to be true will be true, it's very expensive and we have no family of history any disease.

It's a personal decision, just like breastfeeding. Go with what your gut tells you is the right thing to do.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

we are def doing it b/c DH is adopted and the only medical information we have is that his biological aunt died of luekemia when she was 25. Had we known about his family history and it was fine I dont think we would do it then, no diseases in my family to worry about.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We went with Viacord, my DH researched and decided on this one. We decided that even though we may never need the blood we would never forgive ourselves if god forbid our child wound up needing it. We hope it's the biggest waste of money ever!! As for how much cord blood can really do, we figured that it can only get better over the years.

We were unsure of whether cord blood banking was worth it, but my BIL is a physician and was emphatic about it. He said it's amazing what they're doing with it now...imagine what they can do with it a few years down the road.

We're using CBR. (My OB happen to have their kits.)

Thanks everyone!
I actually registered with Viacord this morning. The 1 time fee is going up as of July 1st, so I wanted to do it before.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

Viacord and CBR are both fantastic companies. I wouldn't go with a no name brand in case the company goes bankrupt - they would be transferred to one of the big ones and the integrity of the sample is disturbed.

We had a friend who had no family history and their son got leukemia. Just to counter the family history.

What cemented it for me was thinking about how much I pay a YEAR for all types of insurance - health, home CAR and I don't use it. The price to bank is minimal when you look at all the other insurance you pay for, but hope never to have to use.

I used CBR (I posted $250 coupon codes if anyone wants to do a search) and they found quite a few matches for the actual child. The other 40+ matches had been sibling and one MOTHER!!!

http://cordblood.net/pdf/trackrecord_transummary.pdf

I'm sure Viacord has just as stellar record
