Boiler/Furnance Brands
Is there a particular name that you would recommend. We are getting estimates this week and next. The first guy came today and gave us a quote for $4400 and the boiler comes with a 10 year guarentee

Most oil companies will recommend "Builder grade boilers" especially those that are financed through the payment plan. They are ok but not the best and hence, the average or bottom of the line that many builders put in new construction.
I did a lot of research on this and WEIL-MCCLANE is the BEST.
My main contractor started off life as a plumber and he said, "They are the Cadillac of boilers, are more expensive, but burn a lot more efficiently, so you get the money back in less oil consumption".
He installed ours for us. It was in a million pieces
ETA: $4K is a cheap boiler and they are still making money on the deal. In order to compare apples to apples, make sure you have them write down on the quote exactly what brand and all of the specs of the model that they recommend. That way you can research the boiler's brand. The name of the oil company doesn't matter when buying a boiler, it's the brand of the boiler. Many will sell you the cheapest piece of cr ap boiler.

The boiler they want to give us is WeilMcClain
ETA- My husband said that was a good boiler brand but to be honest the man doesn't know a hammer from a screwdriver so I thought I would ask on here. The guy left the specs page and that is the boiler a Weil-McClane.
Thank you for the advice- so does that price sound bad for that boiler?

Re: Boiler/Furnance Brands
It depends upon the size of your house and what model. We have a large colonial so if you have a smaller house that might explain it.
Also, some companies charge you less for the boiler and "rake you over the coals" by inflating their cost per gallon of oil price in the contract. That's where they often make up the difference and then some. I'd scrutenize the cost per gallon price very closely.
I'm pleasantly surprised that they recommended Weil-McClane!!
We did COD oil delivery this year as the boiler was completely new and we had my contractor put it in. The highest we paid was $2.09 per gallon w/ a 200 galllon minimum. It can be a PITA, because you must monitor it yourself and they only come to certain areas on certain days. We paid 5 cents more a gallon to have them put it on out credit card so we didn't have to be home. But we saved hundred of dollars.
To be honest, my husband knows nothing about houses too. He calls me, "The Queen of Home Improvement" I owe everything I ever learned to my Dad, my FIL and George, my contractor

Re: Boiler/Furnance Brands
I don't know maybe it's because the company that came today has had the contract on this house for 25 years between us and the original owners. We have a 4 bedroom colonial. I don't know it will be interesting to see what the company coming on Saturday says since we don't have a contract with them. We want to do COD this year and just get a contract for the boiler seperate I don't know if that's possible.

When you got the 4K quote did you tell them the above? I'm just trying to figure out if the quote reflected their believing you would have a service contract and a contract for oil with them.
If you didn't then that quote might make sense as they very well might be charging you a lesser price on the install for the boiler figuring they will make up the difference in the higher per gallon oil cost. Just read the fine print very carefully and make sure that price isn't tied to the continuation of a contract with them. Last winter, we found only one company that wanted to install what we considered to be a "sub-par" boiler for us W/O a contract for oil Meenan, wouldn't even consider giving us a quote for the job unless we signed for them for oil. I said to the rep, "I know this is not your fault, but your company's policy is absolutely ridiculous.... sorry, I wasted your time but no way in a million years would I agree to such terms."
It's good you are doing this now, off season. WE had no choice last year as we closed on the house in the fall.

Re: Boiler/Furnance Brands
We are having a new boiler installed next week (Weil-McLane). We got 3 quotes. 1)Slomin's-$4000 and we had to use their oil-not lock-in but use them (I forget what their lock in was at the time). 2) Swezey's-just under $3000 (offering 10% off b/c it's summer) but also had to use their oil and they were offering a lock-in of $2.84. 3) We went with our COD company we've been using. He's $3300 and we get a lower price for oil than Swezey's. We only paid above $2 once this winter (2.11 to be exact.) The boiler will also be for 2 zones. I forget what the warantee was.

Re: Boiler/Furnance Brands
Theresa, I don't think my hubby told them that we probably weren't renewing our contract. I personally am not thrilled with the company for MANY reasons. But since we are technically still under contract with them until August maybe that is why also.

May I ask who was the 3rd guy you used?

Re: Boiler/Furnance Brands
We got a Peerless boiler. We got a new water tank at the same time, so I am not sure what the breakdown was for each. The total was about $5000 (maybe a little less).
